"Highly recommend! I visited others and love Gracie Barra specifically for the following: professors know their patrons, everyone is so kind and friendly, little champs has a max ratio for professors:kids (over 5 months in and the ratio is rarely >4:1, and quite impressively it's often 2-3:1 child for the little champs program), there's a set routine that augments learning for kids (warmup, drill, technique, etc), and they have patient, knowledgeable and skilled professors (2-4 Professors -black belts- plus coaches and with varying levels of experience). I stress the ratio bc you won't see this at most other BJJ gyms. In my limited experience, I've seen ratios of 7-10:1 child. I stress the black belts and variety of the Professors and Coaches because this allows top-tier learning and students assisting and coaches to also learn teaching methodology from Professor Hector. This all leads to my 4 year old surprisingly remembering moves and drills after only 4 weeks and minimal time standing around. The business and space is well organized. The space is clean, has two separate mat areas, private changing space, workspace for parents, and ample seating options for adults and siblings. It wasn't hot and uncomfortable either - I mention this bc another place was hot and there was not enough seating. I pass by 2 other BJJ locations to get to this one. You won't regret choosing Gracie Barra!"
"One of the best jiu jitsu gyms in the area! I’ve taken my son to several and this one is top tier! Great professors, great facilities, and great people to train with. I would highly recommend checking this place out if you’re a parent looking to get their child active, disciplined, and taught a great martial art they could use in real life. They’ll give you a trial class to see if it’s a good fit before you get signed up. Couldn’t ask for more!"
"Visiting this school could not be more welcoming. The experience that all the professors bring make the new student feel at ease and appreciated. Professors Pedro, Hector, and Victoria have designed a top level school to build up the community. From the young kids to adults aspiring to enter the martial arts world."
"This facility is top-notch; everything about it exceeds my expectations. It is very spacious in comparison to many other MMA gyms I've experienced, very clean, good energy always, and the instructors are the best that you can ask for. If you want to work with coaches that care deeply about your success and if you want to be surrounded by goal-oriented and inspiring individuals, look no further-- this is the place for you! :)"
"Just visited this location on the soft opening day and I was highly impressed by the mat space. It was so large and open. I was also very impressed with the fact that they were able to keep the facility nice and cool with this open concept space in 100 degree Houston weather!!! I started Jiu Jitsu with my daughter many years ago and I've visited many Gracie Barra gyms in different states. I've been to Long Beach, Virginia, Different gyms across Texas and I can tell you that you will feel spoiled at Gracie Barra Richmond. Having a large mat space is extremely rare and having high rank black belts teaching classes is also very rare. Many gyms have blue belts, purple belts or even brown belts teaching class. Especially with kids classes! However you will see Black Belts teaching kids classes here and lower belts assisting. That is very rare with such large gyms. Professor Hector is great with the kids and I've seen him at many tournaments with a large group of kids and the promise of pizza parties for after tournaments. What kid wouldn't want to train under a Black Belt who throws post tournament pizza parties?!?! Although I do not know what the smaller mat is for on the other side, I found that to be a very convenient mat space to have especially if you have smaller children that needs to be separated from the larger size children. Waiting areas and benches were comfortable and close enough distance to view your kids while they train. Many Gracie Barra Gyms do not have a women's program. Aside from Gracie Barra Westchase, Gracie Barra River Oaks, I am unaware of any other programs that have women only classes. For me this is very important. At this location, Professora Victoria teaches the women's class. She is extremely knowledgeable , friendly and caring. You won't feel uncomfortable at all at any age or experience level. She is amazing! For adult coed classes - I want to reiterate how rare it is to have Black Belts teaching class but it is even more exciting to have World Champion Pedro Marinho teaching class. You can't go wrong with Gracie Barra Richmond. I highly recommend it for families, serious competitors & self defense."
