"8-year-old, well check on 3-31-2021; if I could give you zero stars, I would. As a professional, I sat in that patient room listening to you ramble on about your beliefs, family, and how I should allow my child to learn that the world isn't rainbows and fun. I needed to teach my child disappointment. I wanted to lose my cool, I wanted to rip into you and let you have it, but as a Mother I wouldn't do that in front of my child as a professional I wouldn't dishonor the medical community. Dr. Kahn, do you know me? Do you know me personally, or even let's say as an acquaintance? No, no, you do not. In medical school, did they not teach you that you must leave all your bias, beliefs and judgments at the door before you enter a patient's room for a consult? " As a health professional, it is imperative that you learn to build trusting relationships with your patients. Part of of forming trust is listening to each patient's individual needs and establishing an awareness of his or her culture. You must be open to people who are different from you. A cultural assessment is an integral part part of forming a full database of information about each patient" ( Javrvis & Eckhardt 2000). All I asked the nurse to tell you was please be gentle when you speak to my child about their weight. Nothing more, nothing less. As I continue my MSN I will use your ignorance and intolerance as motivation. Did I discriminate because you are not from the same culture as myself? No, the answer is no, I would never discriminate. You may not care who "hates" you, like you said, but deep down I think you hate yourself the most and I feel so sorry for your family and other patients you may encounter. Did the oath you took to do no harm not include emotional abuse? My child's new pediatrician could not believe what she heard when I played her the recording of our appointment. She was appalled and disgusted. My child is 8, and all I wanted was a Well-Check, not a discussion on parenting, being a jerk or obstetrics. I hope you take time to reflect on your behavior as a professional and I truly hope you see the err of your ways. These are children, and if they didn't already know disappointment, which my child does, but you didn't know this, they will after a visit with you. I pray that you become the doctor you were meant to be, I will always pray for you, I want you to change for the good of all your patients.
