Reviews of Chez Kobayashi Pastries
"I was glad when I found this Japanese/French Cafe that's almost the only authentic place in Houston that sells anything close to French sweets!! The apple/raisin rolls, eclairs, & mini fruit tarts are all good choices & pretty delicious. I'd just suggest for them to add some variety such as Napoleon, tropizienne, macarons or other French pastries. The mini fruit tarts are $6 each but are tasty"
"Chez Kobayashi sells French pastries but bakers are Japanese. That means the pastries aren’t overly sweet. The bakery also offers crepes, coffee, tea, croissant sandwich, and quiche. Staff greeted me once I entered the bakery. They waited for me patiently to decide on the pastries I wanted. The selection wasn’t huge but whatever were displayed in the display case, they looked very appetizing. I had to-go tarts, eclair, Mont Blanc, and a couple of croissants. The tart shells were baked perfectly. The fruits in the fruit tarts were fresh. The custards in the tarts, in terms of sweetness, were perfect. The passion fruit, and lemon tarts were tart, and there were strong passion fruit, and lemon taste respectively. However, the mango tart didn’t have any hint of mango which was disappointing. The dark chocolate ganache tart was delicious. The ganache tasted semi-sweet and rich. The chocolate eclair was super good. It was big and filled with custard from front to back. The eclair shell was baked perfectly. The shell was soft but not soggy. Yummy! The chocolate croissant, and the chocolate almond croissant were fluffy and crispy. But they lacked the buttery taste. The chocolate used in both croissants were good. The almond chocolate croissant was topped with generous amount of sliced almonds, and had very strong almond after taste. Lastly, the chestnut flavored cream in the Mont Blanc didn’t come through. It was like eating another pastry with colored cream. There is plenty of parking since the bakery is located in a strip mall. The bakery is clean and has inviting interior for customers to enjoy their food. There are a couple of tables and chairs outside the bakery for outdoor dining. I would be back again for their pastries, and also the accessibility is a plus."
"An excellent Japanese bakery with rare and surprising treats like Mont Blanc or Paris Brest. The corner couch with its Japanese kids books and down tempo music is perfect nook for a mid afternoon chill with great coffee and quality pastries. One thing I'd change the coffee should be served coffee in a mug instead of a paper cup when dining in."
"On a date with my wife and we decided to visit Chez Kobayashi Pastries. I give this place 5 stars. Beautifully balanced pastry. I ate the apple raisin roll. It was delicious. I paired it with my signature order…a decaf ice latte with oat milk. Price was very reasonable. We spent a total of $11 for a pastry and two coffees. WOW, I usually spend $8 on one coffee in city centre. This place is Japanese run, so the sweetness is very Asian in taste, not too sweet and just the right balance for me. The shop is owned by a Japanese couple that just moved to Houston about a year and a half ago to open up their pastry shop. I highly recommend this shop for a really great taste and attention to detail. They have a very large menu. I’ll be coming back to try their crepes."
