Umbrella House
About the Business
Umbrella House, located at 1300 Westway Drive in Sarasota, Florida, is a renowned architectural gem that has been featured in Architectural Digest as one of the five most remarkable houses of the mid-twentieth century. Originally commissioned by developer Philip Hiss in 1953, the house was designed by Paul Rudolph as a showcase for his new development, Lido Shores. The iconic "umbrella" structure, which gives the house its name, serves as a sunshade that unites the pool and home complex in a cohesive architectural gesture. The original umbrella was lost in a storm in the 1960s but was carefully restored in 2015, receiving awards for preservation and rehabilitation. Visitors can also tour the historic Healy Guest House, also known as the Cocoon House, designed by Ralph Twitchell and Paul Rudolph in 1950. This intimate cottage features a catenary roof made with innovative polymer spray technology. Additionally, the Revere Quality House, designed by Paul Rudolph and Ralph Twitchell in 1948, exemplifies indoor/outdoor Florida living with its blend of International Style and environmentally sensitive design. This house is a paradigm of how design choices can encourage harmonious living with the natural environment. For the full Winter/Spring 2024 schedule, visitors can click here for more information.
