Cataract Falls State Recreation Area
About the Business
Cataract Falls State Recreation Area, located at 2605 North Cataract Road in Spencer, Indiana, is a beautiful park and tourist attraction. The park is part of Lieber State Recreation Area, which covers 8,075 acres and includes a 1,400-acre lake. The Cataract Falls, fed by Mill Creek, are a stunning natural feature within the park.
The area has a rich history, once inhabited by the Miami, Shawnee, and Potawatomi tribes. In the 1800s, the Miami Indian Confederacy sold part of Indiana to the U.S. government, and the 10 O'Clock Treaty Line passes through the park. Visitors can learn more about the area's history and legends at the Nature Center, where Interpretive Naturalist staff are available to provide information.
The park offers various trails, including the Covered Bridge Nature Trail, a moderate 0.75-mile trail that starts and ends near the sports and activity field. The trail features a stoned path with benches and a covered bridge, and is wheelchair accessible.
For those interested in outdoor activities, history, and natural beauty, Cataract Falls State Recreation Area is a must-visit destination in Indiana.

"This place is such a hidden gem! I've lived in southern Indiana for 22 years and I never realized we had such a sizable waterfall! The covered bridge is a vibe as well, and I rather enjoyed all the graffiti inside of it. It's a good idea to bring a windbreaker though, as the wind near the waterfall can be cutting in lower temps. Really beautiful and relatively accessible if you're disabled. Our visit was in late February. Can't wait to see it once leaves come back!"
"Proclaimed as Indiana’s largest waterfall. I had a great time exploring the falls area last weekend. It was overcast and a little rainy so I pretty much had the park to myself. Beautiful upper and lower falls, and an old covered bridge. I could sit and listen to the falls all day"
"A spectacular set of waterfalls! An impressive covered bridge. Note: The trail is a little rough and the upper part of the trail (that goes from upper falls to lower falls) can be dangerous because there are no guardrails and there are several steep grades. So, I recommend driving on the access road to get to the lower falls if you are not an experienced trail hiker."
"this place is absolutely stunning. one of my favorite places in indiana to see. if you’re not a fan of walking, i recommend parking at the lower falls and walking to the upper falls."
"100% worth the $9 out-of-state entry fee!! ($7 for Indiana residents) Spontaneously decided to follow a highway sign for Cataract Falls, and was NOT disappointed! Absolutely gorgeous and a true hidden gem of the Midwest."
