Ave Maria Grotto
About the Business
Ave Maria Grotto is a place of worship and a popular tourist attraction located at 1600 Saint Bernard Drive in Cullman, Alabama, United States. It is home to the fruitful work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, OSB, a Benedictine monk from the Abbey of Saint Bernard. Originally from Landschutt, Bavaria-Germany, Brother Joseph came to the United States to pursue monastic life at the only Benedictine abbey in Alabama. Little did anyone know that this young Bavarian would leave his greatest legacy to the abbey in an incredibly humble way.
Since 1934, people from all over the world have visited Ave Maria Grotto to see famous parts of the world in miniature. The old quarry of the abbey now houses the 4-acre park where the Grotto and surrounding miniatures rest. From Montserrat to St. Peter's Basilica, guests can enjoy this labor of love and hopefully leave realizing how small acts of love, no matter how insignificant they may seem, can be so fruitful in the years to come.

"Absolutely gorgeous landmark with lots of history. Well worth driving to this place and taking a tour and reading about how it was built . They have a beautiful beautiful display during Christmas time and Easter is just stunning. We used to go to the morning sunrise service. There is also a gift shop. I would say that the little outdoor tour could be somewhat strenuous if you were trying to push a stroller or if you have knee or back problems but it’s definitely not a hiking trail. Just a nice little stroll ..absolutely gorgeous.. They even earned a spot on Cullmanopoly!"
"What a fun experience. The details of these miniatures are just amazing. Well worth visiting. Doesn't take long to go through, maybe 30 - 40 minutes. There's even benches if you want to sit and reflect."
"Pretty place the miniature buildings are very unique and interesting but they could use some maintenance and TLC on some of them. The church where the Monks are burried was beautiful inside. Tickets for Grotto are $10 for adults and worth it."
"We stopped by on the way to the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament to check out their gift shop and were pleasantly surprised! The gift shop had more items than we thought it would! This is a great place for religious items and resources! We left with a statue to place outside of our home and a few pieces for the inside as well! The Ave Maria Grotto is worth a trip in itself! We look forward to coming back and checking out the whole property soon!"
"This was really cool. Very detailed work and it's amazing a guy just did this. Entry fee wasn't bad and it was a great experience. If your in the area it's worth a walk through!"
