It is home to the fruitful work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, OSB, a Benedictine monk from the Abbey of Saint Bernard. Originally from Landschutt, Bavaria-Germany, Brother Joseph came to the United States to pursue monastic life at the only Benedictine abbey in Alabama. Little did anyone know that this young Bavarian would leave his greatest legacy to the abbey in an incredibly humble way. Since 1934, people from all over the world have visited Ave Maria Grotto to see famous parts of the world in miniature. The old quarry of the abbey now houses the 4-acre park where the Grotto and surrounding miniatures rest. From Montserrat to St. Peter's Basilica, guests can enjoy this labor of love and hopefully leave realizing how small acts of love, no matter how insignificant they may seem, can be so fruitful in the years to come.
