About the Business
Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk Pavilion is a beautiful park and tourist attraction located at 100 Riverwalk Drive in Portage, Indiana, United States. This area, opened in October 2008, offers visitors a chance to enjoy the stunning views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding landscape. The site was formerly used for industrial purposes but has been successfully reclaimed for public enjoyment.
Visitors can easily access the lakefront and beach, explore trails showcasing dune succession and Burns Waterway, fish from an accessible pier, and admire a restored 900-foot breakwater. The 3,500 square foot public pavilion features restrooms, a seasonal snack bar, and a glass-walled classroom/meeting space.
Open daily from sunrise to dusk, the location is a popular spot to witness the changing seasons along Lake Michigan, observe migrating birds, and marvel at the dramatic weather patterns over the lake. The facilities are ADA compliant, with stair and trail access available from the parking areas.
The pavilion is a Gold LEED certified building, designed to minimize its impact on the reclaimed landscape. Visitors are encouraged to park in designated spots and help protect the fragile dune ecosystem along the roadside. "Walking along the pier is probably the best part to see Lake Michigan. On a clear day, you can see the Chicago skyline (only 35 miles away!)"
"A great stop not too far off the freeway to enjoy walk on the beach, or have lunch at a picnic table"
"It’s a cool place to experience good sunset view. I hope everyone likes this place"
"I love this beach, beautiful scenery and usually not too crowded."
"Really nice beach spot and accessible walkway. There is a good amount of parking and everything is paved. We took our son in his stroller all over. It is possible to get to the beach with a wheelchair or stroller. The pavilion is nice and there is a small concession stand with some food and drinks for purchase."
