"My daughter voluntarily went to Wacovia Springs in the Fall of 2023 for help with drug addiction. She telephoned first with insurance questions and was told to come to the Center. She had a friend drive her the 75 miles to the Center and drop her off. After waiting for a considerable amount of time, she was called back for assessment. Her heartrate was high which one might expect from someone using amphetamines. She was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The hospital did a cursory check and released her. She had no transportation and Wacovia Springs would not help her when she called. She left the hospital on foot with her suitcase and no money at night in downtown Jacksonville. She got lost and called someone from home to drive the 75 miles to Jacksonville to pick her up. She waited on the street for almost two hours. I thank God everyday that she was not harmed. She is mentally disabled and weighs less than 90 pounds. She went back to Wacovia Springs where she was told that charges for admission would be several thousand dollars. She is covered by Medicare because she is disabled. She left in tears and came home. I called the general number to express concern and found the person who answered to be poorly trained to answer questions about insurance and patient protocol. I kept getting "let me check on that" for every question. A few weeks later my daughter received a bill for $500.00 ambulance services. She was never told about the cost. I have worked in mental health as a therapist for many years and this is the worst case of mistreatment and endangerment that I have encountered. Fortunately, we found a reputable treatment center and my child is on the road to recovery. If you are a loved one, need help with a mental health or addiction concern, please seek help at a place with trained personnel and a sense of compassion."
"During my time here, I cannot say I have gotten any better. Weather it's because of this facility specifically or the type of institution in general as a whole, I felt worse being here than anywhere else. Coming from a place where I already felt a lack of fundamental support, being here was incredibly isolating. It felt like being in prison, but not as bad. It was too restrictive to be in the name of "mental health improvement". From the ineffective group counseling to controlled access to the little redeeming parts like the television room and the telephones. I could find much to do other than being on the phone with friends and family, and couldn't make sense of why the phone would seemly be turned on and off randomly. Having a cut off point at night makes sense, sure; but if I should happen to skip activities like gym or breakfast I should be able to use the phone in that time instead. And it would often be that someone had to ask for them to be turned back on, That said, very few, but some, individuals made the whole experience worse by their sheer apathy. Some people are not made to work with other people, and it was clear in others that the job was just not to their liking. I am glad to be out, and hopefully I will say out. Specking especially from someone who seemed better off than most, I may even be too critical. While this place may serve to help some, it simply failed to do much for me."
"Wish I could give a negative star review but here’s my scoop on things. My experience at this facility was beyond traumatic and not so helpful. The morning shift staff weren’t actually so bad until my first day there. Another patient had overdosed on some medication (won’t get too in depth about that) and other patients sat around and watched this happen as the nurses tried to resuscitate this woman and yelling at each other. I understand that they’re only doing their jobs and they did great doing so, however; US PATIENTS sat there for about 10-15 minutes and were given permission to use cellphones while this was happening. After the 15 was when they finally told other patients to return to their rooms until they were given an okay to come back out to use the phones. The night time staff were beyond unbelievable. They don’t care about any patients at all even when we’re in desperate need. I had asked for some medicine for a urinary tract infection that was slowly starting and was ignored all the way through. This infection had reached my kidney and I can’t even seek medical attention until I pay the bill for my stay at this facility. The temperature in the facility was freezing and wasn’t even allowed to bring any blanket outside and it caused me to fall ill. Im disgusted with the night time crew’s attitudes and professionalism. You have nurses screaming about their baby daddy issues and court issues and all their unnecessary drama throughout the night and if you try asking for any assistance, you’re standing there for +40 minutes having to listen to their whole drama or they just pretend that you don’t even exist. I’m glad that I was discharged the morning after. So if you’re thinking about sending your loved ones here or are seeking help yourself; run elsewhere to a facility that actually gives a damn. This place will run you dry for your money. This facility will put you and your loved one to the grave and they don’t mind throwing the fattest bill in your face at the run. If I were you; I’d run."
"This place became my worst nightmare. My husband was taken there last week for some quality treatment. He was there for 4 days and I never spoke to his case manager. It took me 2 days just to find out his unit and when visiting hours were. I never got calls back from anyone. I had so many names of people and only spoke to 2. He was sent to a hospital for pneumonia and a stomach virus. When I went to pick his things up only half of his clothes were there. His walker was missing. They were supposed to be looking for it but no phone calls back. To top it off, somebody stole his credit card. His wallet and phone were supposed to be in a safe and secure place. The receptionist at the front desk became my best source and answered my questions."
"Unless you enjoy being drugged for ten days, assaulted, clogged toilets and handed a bill from this facility. Stay clear away. if you want your family member proper mental care go elsewhere. This place isn't equip to handle the mentally ill. They just care about making sure you are sedated and pay your bill. This system setup is just geared for a repeat visit if you don't seek out help you deserve."
