Wood’s Chapel BBQ
About the Business
Wood's Chapel BBQ is a restaurant located at 85 Georgia Avenue Southeast in Atlanta, Georgia. Named after one of the first churches to serve the Summerhill community after the Civil War, Wood's Chapel BBQ specializes in traditional wood-fired barbecue. Their menu features whole hog, prime brisket, salmon, and turkey cooked over wood-fired pits.

The restaurant is part of a redevelopment project in the Summerhill neighborhood, which has a rich history dating back to the post-Civil War era. The area has seen many changes over the years, but the redevelopment aims to revitalize the community and bring new life to the historic Georgia Avenue.
Wood's Chapel BBQ was opened in June 2019 by Todd Ginsberg, Shelley Sweet, and Jennifer and Ben Johnson, who are also partners in other popular Atlanta restaurants. They are committed to being a part of the historic community and contributing to its growth and development.
For those interested in learning more about the history of Summerhill and Georgia Avenue, a digital history project called Streetscape Palimpsest offers an interactive and informative look at the area's past. "After tasting the sweet colored greens, I wanted to drop this down to four star. The delicious, authentic cornbread and seasoned brisket and ribs with the awesome baked beans with burnt ends Pushed this place back up to a five star. No issues with the service, plenty seating. Parking wasn’t very visible but I made a Way. Some may struggle with parking, but there are signs for additional parking. The chocolate pecan pie looked interesting but I didn’t try. The banana pudding didn’t look interesting. Fair pricing for inner city BBQ. I feel that this place could be a four-star, depending on the items you choose, much like many places, whereas we know some places have more positives than negative’s. My experience today was good. Pew seats and card table seats in front. Those greens look delicious, but they were sweet and which I couldn’t eat , all of them. Good bbq sauce and all the amenities you need. Good straightforward menu and restaurant set up. Check this place out. Many other eateries nearby."

The only thing I enjoyed was the sweet tea. The brisket was overcooked and the tator tots were fried too hard. The cashier had a horrible attitude. I don't understand how restaurants allow subpar service and survive. The manager was floating around but no contact with the restaurant patrons. Moving forward, if I want good BBQ, I will go to Rodney Scott or to the hood! My experience was a 3. Epic failure! And the tater tots were fried too hard. The cashier had a horrible attitude. I don't understand how these subpar restaurants survived. The manager floats around but has no contact with the restaurant patrons. If you want good BBQ, go to the hood! Very Disappointed Kirk"
"I received Woods Chapel barbecue from a friend of 30 years as a recommendation. He is generally spot on with his recommendations, so I eagerly went with a friend and colleague of mine to dine. The Decor is nostalgic and reminiscent of the area that the restaurant is in it is literally in the shadow of the Georgia state universities Arena formally the Braves stadium. And the menu is robust a number of really good items. The bar is stacked really really nicely. The food, however, is Average! I love, great barbecue I love great sides. The food here at best is average! I would like to come, and then I went into the restroom. I saw the manager, checking the stalls when needed attention, and he immediately took care of it that tells me that they have service and cleanliness very high! I had the multiple meat plate and the multiple meat plate did not impressed me brisket sausage, barbecue ribs… not at all impress. The barbecue sauce is pretty good, but that’s about it. The Brunswick stew is like nothing I’ve ever had before. It was not good. I had two bites and I was done! Overall this is just a three star establishment."
