"These are not luxury apartments. I lived here for 1 year and could not wait to move. The buildings are so dirty. They do not clean anything or vacuum. The same stains on the walls were still there when I moved out 1 year later. They keep the trash in bins on the floors and it attracts mice. We had 3 mice in our apartment that we had to deal with (also seen one dead in the hallway). The trash is always full and smells. The painting on the walls in the buildings was done half a**. If you use the staircase in building 2 in the parking garage and it rains, the water sits in a huge puddle which seeps into the building and grows mold. They've done nothing about it. The flooring in the apartments was done half a**... you feel the floor pieces move when you step on them. I heard every step the person above me took in their apartment. Everything in your apartment will break (maintenance staff is great though). They had to replace the dryer, the latches on the doors in the apartment to keep the doors closed broke. The hinges on the cabinets in the kitchen were not done properly and are loose. Everything was done half a**. This place is in need of a serious remodel. They charge way too much for these apartments. They wanted to raise our rent another $200 when it came up for renewal and now I see the same apartment online for 2000+! I could not imagine paying 2000 (400 dollar increase from what we were paying) for a 1 bedroom at this place. The water bill on average was 8-10 a month and then randomly jumped to 20 a month with no explanation. Everybody pays for the entire buildings water usage. It's not specific to your usage. The siding is coming off the outside of building 2. The way they designed these buildings... if it's windy, you'll hear the wind hollow in the hallway. Your balcony will be covered by lint from the dryer vents that are over your apartment (there were 4 dryer vents over my balcony). Hopefully you're lucky enough to be in one of the apartments where the pigeons/birds don't sit on your balcony. The only two positives are the view of the water and the parking garage. However, there is a lot of mischief that goes on in the neighborhood. 1"
"I went to pick up an item I'd purchased on Facebook Marketplace. The apartments were easy to locate and she gave me her complete address which was perfect. I found parking directly in front of her building. Great experience."
"I wasn't going to post anything until this building's management decided to delete my post in their internal "community forum" page. Management creates silly rules and lords over residents because they can. Found out before I left after 1 year (a lot of people seem to do this) that the building takes public money for some residents to live here. I think public housing vouchers are great, don't get me wrong, but it became clear that Management takes the money without upkeeping the building. Classic big corporation taking our tax dollars, doing nothing productive with it, and micromanaging people for no reason. Management is run by an investment corporation (called Prime Companies) - you are their asset portfolio, not a tenant. They own like half of Van Shaick island, they do not care about you or your concerns. Before I left, a resident posted in the community forum wanting to organize to demand changes be made to the building because of the state of disrepair and neglect. I responded affirming my support for that person. But oops, Management gets to approve or deny COMMENTS to be made on their forum. Silly me. They denied my comment. $2100/month was a steep price for the one amenity of this building, which is the nice view of the Hudson valley. You can't really enjoy the decks as much as you'd think either. They get filthy quick but you are not authorized to clean them (not even sweep!) because the water and suds will drip onto the decks below you. Spiders everywhere because you're next to a river. The odd "M" design of the building creates an amphitheater effect so you can hear every conversation on every deck. I work from home and realized no one really uses their deck, for good reason. It's more of a hassle than amenity. There are zero other perks to justify that price. Shoddy construction, zero building maintenance, cheap appliances, the list goes on. And after 1 year of living there they increased the rent +$200/month. Over 11%! Why? "The market" "inflation". That is not a reason, that is an excuse. There is around 70 units in the building and assuming they are getting +$200 from each unit, $200x70=$14,000! Per month! What do they need an EXTRA $14,000 per month for? Well my theory, unproven, is that they are getting every last drop from residents to construct an adjacent building, which they have confirmed to be in the works. Again, you are their INVESTMENT, not tenant. Meanwhile, the building is falling apart, with siding not repaired for at least a year leaving bare insulation exposed to the elements year-round. The more you look at the decks - the entire selling point of the place - they're slowly sinking and warping. Some paneling on the decks is coming undone where birds and other animals nest. When you pay $2100/month, you expect no substantive and persistent problems. Management acted like real estate agents. That is a red flag for any rental property. A landlord is not a real estate agent. Two different professions. Agents SELL you a property and you don't really need them afterward. Landlords MAINTAIN the property in which you reside, you need them after you move in. They try to upsell with a nonrefundable "security deposit alternative" (Don't take it!) and they even showed me other residents' personal and confidential information when showing me how the water bill works! No regard for residents, just the asset portfolio for Prime Companies. Shame on Management and Prime for taking taxpayer money and running this promising building into the ground."
"There's really no beating the view at Captain's Lookout and the unique thing is EVERYONE gets that great river view as opposed to other properties. I'm surprised if this place doesn't have people on a waiting list to get in. Tammy was kind and professional start to finish and even offered to research movers for me. I'm from West Virginia and I didn't expect to experience that kind of community feeling up here. Made one of my best friends with my next door neighbor and noticed that most people who live here are very kind (if I even see them at all, the way the building is set up). I really couldn't think of a negative thing to say; one comment mentioned being pricey, but the rates are even below market value for what you're getting these days. Worth a tour!"
"Today is our 1 month anniversary of living at Captain's Lookout Apartments. We sold our home of 25+ years and chose to downsize here in a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, + den. Everyday we see boats, wildlife (including bald eagles), glorious sunrises and occasional evening fireworks from our beautiful balcony. The complex itself is quiet, clean and peaceful. Our property manager Cecelia is professional, personable, and very accommodating to our needs. She is top notch at her job and one of the reasons we chose to live here. We could not be happier with our decision to make this our new home."
