Slide Mountain Wilderness is the largest and most popular wilderness area in the Catskill Forest Preserve, located at 455 Woodland Valley Road, Phoenicia, New York, United States. Covering over 47,500 acres, this park offers extensive foot trails that provide access to remote interior areas, including lofty peaks with spectacular views. Slide Mountain, the tallest peak in the Catskills, is a highlight of the area and inspired poet and naturalist John Burroughs.
Visitors can explore 35 miles of trails open exclusively to foot travel, providing an uninterrupted backcountry experience. Popular trails include the Phoenicia East Branch Trail, Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide Trail, Curtis-Ormsbee Trail, and Giant Ledge-Panther Mountain-Fox Hollow Trail. These trails offer varying levels of difficulty and stunning views of the surrounding wilderness.
In addition to hiking, visitors can also enjoy backcountry camping at 24 designated primitive campsites and 3 lean-tos. The Long Path, a section of the NY/NJ Long Path Trail, crosses through the Slide Mountain Wilderness, offering a 350-mile trail experience from Fort Lee, NJ to Altamont, NY.

"A great hike (do both Giant Ledge and Panther - don't skimp out). Quintessential Catskill hike but not particularly aggressive in any area. Multiple views and apparently a nice dusting of snow on 10/26/18. You're also in a 375 Million YO - 6 mile wide impact crater, that the mountain rests over, which adds to the experience."
