C-Street Cooperative Preschool
About the Business
C-Street Cooperative Preschool, located at 1901 Thomson Road in Charlottesville, Virginia, has been providing a nurturing and creative learning environment for children for over 50 years. Situated near the University of Virginia, our parent-run cooperative encourages families to actively participate in their child's education. Our dedicated team of teachers collaborates closely with parents to ensure each child's success.
Established in 1972, our non-profit school operates independently with the support of a board of directors led by parent co-chairs. Housed in the basement of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church since 2020, we rent space and equipment from the church but maintain our own unique identity. Our play-based curriculum allows children to explore their imaginations through activities like storytelling, music, dress-up, woodworking, and outdoor play in our garden.
At C-Street Cooperative Preschool, we embrace diversity and welcome students of all backgrounds. Our inclusive admissions policy ensures that every child has access to our educational programs and activities. We prioritize outdoor play and hands-on learning experiences to foster creativity and curiosity in our young learners. Join us at C-Street Cooperative Preschool for a fun and enriching early childhood education experience.

"Fantastic experience at Chancellor St Preschool Co-Op. It is a great community of teachers, parents, and kids. We couldn't be happier with our experience."
"Chancellor Street Co-operative Preschool is an amazing community of teachers, parents, and children that has been a Charlottesville institution for over forty years. I have met C-street alumni whose own children have now graduated from the school. We have sent all three of our children to the school and loved every minute of it. This is a "co-op" preschool, which means the parents are the owners, employees, board, and administrators. Every parent has a job and every family takes turns helping out in the classroom. The result is a group of parents that truly want to be involved in their children's education, and put their own time and energy behind that. As a side effect, it also makes C-street the best preschool bargain in town, since the two (amazing, wonderful) teachers are the only employees. The play-based curriculum is described on the "Philosophy" page of their website. The indoor and outdoor facilities are rich, inviting, and fun, and full to bursting with activities that the teachers rotate throughout the year as they progress through various themes. C-street rents space in the education annex of St. Paul's Church but is not otherwise affiliated with the church (or any religious faith). It is a half-day preschool and children can go three, four, or five days a week. Financial aid is available."
