Proper Topper

"Wow ! It is rare for me to write a review but I am compelled to, this Store is so special .The Proper Topper has been my favorite Shop in Washington DC for many years .Gifts, jewelry , books , clothes , hats, puzzles, baby necessities and so many other things that I cannot begin to list. Everything is unique and beautiful . I am always a bit overwhelmed, I find myself longing to purchase way more than I anticipated. Whenever I am in town I make a point of visiting . Anna , the beautiful woman with short blonde hair,is always so nice . She has so much knowledge and exquisite taste. Do not deprive yourself ! It is wonderful ."

"This is my favorite place to go to when I need a thoughtful gift. I LOVE that everything here is unique, even the ordinary is different. I love getting my spouse notebooks for work, baby gifts, PUZZLES for myself that I don't find elsewhere (even online), jewelry, and my favorite luxury lavender bolster. Every time I walk in, I feel like it's a personal shopping experience. I've gotten to now those who work there and they REMEMBER what I like. I once told them about my 78 year old mother who was dealing with neck pain and found me a eucalyptus, heat pad that she uses every day. BEST place for shopping."

"Beautiful collection of gifts, books, clothing, jewelry and of course, hats. This store is a go-to stop for baby gifts, birthday gifts or a box of something special to brighten someone’s day. I am a particular fan of the “Box of Wonder.” Give them a budget and a theme (cozy self-care, for example) and they’ll curate a gorgeous box of delights for a lucky recipient."

"I intentionally visited this store as it was listed as a stockist on the Stetson website. I was unenthused to find no Stetson brand hats and in fact just not that many hats for men in general. This store is more of a gift shop than anything. This is all disappointing but fine. The main reason for the low rating is that I brought my fiancé along with me (whom happens to be a woman of color), and at one point I noticed an employee - woman with short blonde hair - following her and standing close to her awkwardly pretending to be organizing a nearby shelf while actually trying to keep an eye on my partner. As someone who has worked in retail myself I recognized the behavior right away. It made me so uncomfortable that I encouraged my partner not to make a purchase and we left. I will say that the other employee, a younger woman with dark hair was very nice."

"For context, I’m a brown woman with tattoos. Me and my fiancé came to this store thinking they would have more Stetson hat options. It was a bit more hallmark for our tastes. The old lady with short blonde hair followed me around as if I was going to steal something. It was incredibly disrespectful and made me not want to buy the cute blue beret that matched my recently purchased hand made earrings. I’ve worked retail in management before and I understand the difference between service and stalking. Her behavior made me and my fiancé uncomfortable. We’ll never come back and if by chance any of our friends mention Proper Topper, we will tell them to go to Solid State instead."
