"Review Rented for three years with them, only stayed there because I was going through school at the time. Be ready for yearly rent increases of 5% or more (with no new amenities) cited as to offset inflation in the midst of a housing shortage. Our first one bedroom apartment was $1,100 in June of 2020, by 2023 it was $1,500 and may be more now. Response to maintenance items was slow. The apartment above ours had a leaking pipe that rotted away the drywall in our bathroom ceiling, this left us with a fairly large hole their solution was to just cover it with a plastic sheet and not fix the leak. Stayed that way for 2 months with them saying they were trying to fix it. It took me calling a plumber right down the street to get it fixed within a week. Additionally in the same apartment heat would constantly dip to 50 degrees (94 Main Street Apt A) during the winter. Our next apartment 96 Main Street Apt B had heat stop in the middle of December due to a miscommunication by the property manager, us, and the owner of the company (David Schlansky) which caused the property manager to “leave” the company shortly after. Over three years we had 4 property managers with each one the same issues followed. Attached are pictures of our apartment and the condition we left it in when we left, we had deductions from our security deposit for its condition. This company is poorly run by a someone whose character is evident by reading any of his statements that have been published as public record either as a lawyer or as a defendant."
"Found an apartment my wife and I loved. Sent in an application and started the process. The day after we applied they raised the rent by $250 a month. Classic bait and switch. No ethical or moral compass for these people. I should have given more weight to the reviews on the internet. I would stay clear of greedy honorless landlords. 166 Battery St."
"Top shelf restoration of the original Colonel ILsley's barn at 24 Washington St. Middlebury 1880's.Attention to detail at every turn. Saving hints of the original old barn(exposed beams in every apt.) is quite a nice feature.My wife and I have been restoring old properties for over 35 years in Ohio and Vermont and it is so nice to be able to live in one without having to do all the work. Great location, positive management experience. Always someone there to answer your needs. A+++++"
"DO NOT RENT FROM BIRCHFIELD. YOU WILL REGRET IT. SERIOUSLY. where to begin. I have never in all my life encountered a business that operates with less professionalism and respect for their customers. There were SO many issues during my short time renting from them, and I want to let others know what this company is really like. First of all the cost of the place. Rent will fool you. It looks so cheap! It is until you're paying 450 a month for propane that they have in their buildings, not to mention the several times it turned off for no reason in the middle of the winter. When I called and asked Birchfield what I should do, I received verbal harassment! And both times it took at least 3 days to get them to turn it back on (which took less than 5 minutes they actually got around to it)What fun in the Vermont winter! The biggest issue we had involves our downstairs neighbors. The building was very old and the walls were paper thin. We heard everything our neighbors did and vice versa. However, our neighbors complained first and thus the noise became our fault and our fault only. Despite these neighbors harassing us and screaming at us in the middle of the night, the fact that we had to call CPS on them several times for abusive screaming towards their young son, and the fact that we were just not that loud, we were HARASSED by burchfield for the "noise" we created until we were eventually asked to leave. My roommate and I recieved emails so hostile it was shocking how unprofessional it was. Never once did the people from Birchfield ever attempt a face to face meeting about this, despite innumerable requests from myself and the fact that their office was less than a mile from our home. They never once asked our perspective nor would they listen when we tried to offer it. We were dismissed, not listened to, and disrespected. Our apartment was bugged (without our knowledge) and they told us they found no evidence of excessive noise, and we were still kicked to the curb with very little warning or information. After we were kicked out, we were promised a swift return of our security deposit. A month later and nothing. I contact the company and receive a very condescending email in which they explain they have sent it to the address they kicked us out of. Couldn't have just asked for a forwarding address. Now its lost in the wild world of USPS and I'm unsure I'll ever see it. Long story short, do NOT rent from these guys. David Shlansky is an unprofessional scammer who just wants to take your money. I know SO many people who have had similar experiences with this company. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Ask anyone in the Vergennes area- David Shlanksy is a Slum lord who’s business is in taking advantage of others. Matt chabot is no better and I will never forget the treatment I received from This company!"
"I can only speak for my own experience — which so far has been great. In total I viewed 3 of their apartments and had easy and responsive communication with the leasing office. I have had zero issues and the building manager Matt has been great and usually responds within the hour. Unfortunate to hear that others have not had the same experience."
