About the Fore Street Restaurant
Fore Street Restaurant, located at 288 Fore Street in Portland, Maine, is a renowned dining establishment known for its commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The menu at Fore Street changes daily based on the products brought in by local farmers, fishermen, and foragers. Dishes are often prepared over an open wood fired grill or in the wood fired oven, adding a unique flavor to each meal.
Some favorite dishes that often appear on the menu include Collard Greens with Duck Fat Fried Sourdough and Chicken Jus. The restaurant is led by sous chefs Andrew Bruce, Josh Fingeret, Ricky Sheldon, and Iain Smith.
Fore Street opened in June 1996 and is located just one block from the waterfront in Portland's Old Port District. The interior features a brick and soapstone hearth with a wood-burning oven, grill, and turnspit that are visible from most tables. The hardwood and apple wood fires are used to cook and flavor the seafood, meats, game, and vegetables that have made Fore Street a destination for food lovers in New England.
The restaurant has received numerous accolades over the years, including being named in Gourmet Magazine's Top Fifty Restaurants of the United States in 2001 and 2006. Chef-partner Sam Hayward was named "Best Chef - Northeast" by the James Beard Foundation in 2004 and won the Chef's Collaborative "Sustainer of the Year" award in 2011 for his work in sustainability and local food issues. Fore Street has also been a semi-finalist for "Outstanding Restaurant" from the James Beard Foundation since 2011.

Reviews of Fore Street Restaurant
"It was our first time visiting Portland and Fore Street has been on my top list. Talk about great hospitality, we were reserved for the bar and I mentioned I prefer the main dining room if possible and they made it happen! Big thanks to David! Our server, Georgia was very lovely and professional. We had a great night and her wine recommendation was superb. They do change their menu every day which makes it special and they only get it from local purveyors. If you’re visiting Portland don’t miss this gem!"
"The food was amazing. Menu changes daily which is incredible give the menu selection. Need reservations for sure. Super busy, enjoyable atmosphere on a Saturday. Servers space out the meal nicely, are helpful with suggestions and will let you linger and enjoy your meal. Cocktails were just OK. Wine selection was varied and good. Will definitely go back!"
"This place is SUPER, with open-kitchen. You need to reserve your table, however you can just walk there at 5 and get access to one of the 6 tables that are reserved only for walks-in. Those table are in a very well decorated room which is adjacent to the main dining room. Food was excellent, service was very attentive, atmosphere was great! We had a stroller and our 8 months old and they were very nice giving us enough space to keep the stroller close to the table.. this is VERY important, because the next day in their sister restaurant Street & CO the menager wasn’t that caring and asked us to fold the stroller and leave it very far away from our table (in the bar area), and when you have a 8 moths old you DO NEED the stroller available at all time. Next time in Portland I will be back to Fore Street an amazing experience in an amazing restaurant! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️"
"Our favorite meal during our trip to Maine in August! We were recommended this restaurant from a couple that we met at the airport. You really need a reservation so without one, we got there right when it opened for dinner service hoping to be able to snag something, we were able to sit at the bar, which was great! Our meal was fantastic and the atmosphere is amazing and service is excellent!"
"Our waiter Greg was wonderful. The mussels were the best mussels I've ever had. The pork, Shepherds pie and haddock were all delicious. I highly recommend coming here. They allow walk-ins, but I am glad we had a reservation."
