At Chalet Backpackers, we pride ourselves on providing a variety of room options to suit every traveler's needs. Whether you prefer a single, double, or twin room, or if you're looking to socialize and meet new people in our shared dormitories, we have the perfect accommodation for you. All of our rooms feature hotel quality mattresses with bedding included, ensuring a restful night's sleep. Each room is also equipped with heating and room keys for your convenience.
Originally built as The Chalet Hospital in 1904, our beautiful historic building has a rich history and charm that is sure to captivate you. The red brick exterior and impressive appearance make it a standout landmark on High Street. Not only does the building offer stunning views over the city and harbor, but it also holds a special connection to the doctor's residence on Graham Street, which was built around the same time.
Since its conversion into a backpackers in 1991, Chalet Backpackers has been welcoming guests from all walks of life. With a capacity to accommodate up to 50 guests, our establishment offers a friendly and welcoming environment for solo travelers, couples, and groups alike. We are currently undergoing room-by-room renovations to preserve the building's heritage and maintain its unique character.
In addition to our comfortable accommodations, we also provide a range of amenities to make your stay enjoyable. With numerous bathroom facilities and a large laundry area, you'll have everything you need to freshen up and take care of your belongings. Please note that presenting valid photo-ID and a credit card is necessary for check-in, and any alterations to bookings must be made outside of 24 hours of your arrival to avoid a cancelation fee.
At Chalet Backpackers, we understand the importance of relaxation and enjoyment during your travels. Therefore, we permit alcohol in designated ground floor areas until 10.30pm, allowing you to unwind and socialize with fellow guests.

"I have booked this place for a few days until I find a room for me in the city. The place is so nice and the facilities are good. Price is the lowest if you check other places around here. The kitchen has a lot of utensils and the facilities to cook. Enough storage space and the refrigerators. Bathrooms and the toilets are very clean. Their staff is doing the job very well. The staff and the owner are very friendly. They provide all the information you need. I could not find another place to move within the planned period. The owner of this place has offered me the same room I stayed for one more week for a great rate. This place can be highly recommended."
"While quite dated, this backpackers offers good value. I stayed in a private single room which was clean and comfortable. I appreciated having a little desk in the room and plenty of space for my belongings. The bathroom was a little inconvenient with a bath-based shower but this is a function of the building’s age - but a heads up to those with accessibility issues. There’s also no lift as far as I could tell. Also note it’s $2 to have a towel. The staff were friendly and I encountered no issues staying here."
"We spent 3 nights here and were very happy with the stay for the price! I loved the old fashioned carpeting and character of the place, and we made good use of the pool room. If you don’t like larger backpackers maybe avoid, but we found it great. Good location too!"

"I didn’t get a good feeling of the place when I arrived. It was very quiet, and just felt weird, spooky. Later on I was told it used to be a hospital and there’s some spiritual activity going on. I normally don’t believe those things but could perhaps explain my bad feeling. Apart from that, the house is quite old, doors and beds made a lot of noise so it was hard to sleep well. It could also be cleaner. It’s probably still good value for money in Dunedin though, and the staff is helpful."
