Shirley Boys' High School
About the Business
Welcome to Shirley Boys' High School, located at Christchurch, Travis Road, 209. As an establishment and point of interest, our school is dedicated to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment for our students.
At Shirley, we believe in the importance of respect and treating others the way we would want to be treated. We foster a sense of whakaute, or respect, for specific situations both within and outside of school. We celebrate the unique tuakiri, or identity, of each individual while also developing other desirable character strengths.
One of our core values at Shirley is mana, which represents the greatest presence within our school. We constantly strive to be better than before in everything that we do, encouraging our students to reach their full potential.
Whānau, or family, is highly valued at Shirley Boys'. We promote kotahitanga, or unity and aroha, by supporting one another and building positive relationships through whanaungatanga. We believe that a strong sense of connection and support within our school community is crucial for the success of our students.
Hononga, or connection, is another important aspect of our school. We encourage our students to know who they are and contribute to the past, present, and future mauri, or essence, of our kura. This sense of connection helps our students develop a strong sense of identity and purpose.
In addition to our commitment to academic excellence, we also offer various parent/whānau seminars throughout the year. These seminars provide valuable information and support for our students' families.
We invite you to take a virtual tour around our campus, Ōrua Paeroa. Our state-of-the-art facilities include two auditoriums, multiple gyms, modern learning spaces, and much more. We strive to provide our students with the best possible resources and environment for their education.
At Shirley Boys' High School, we are dedicated to nurturing and developing the potential of each and every student. Join us on this journey of growth and discovery.

"SBHS staff care about their students futures and listen to the parents concerns."
"Interesting design for the building but the layout works pretty well but the hallways are to small your shoulder to shoulder when everyone's trying to get to class or assembly. Most of the teachers are great, friendly and teach incredibly well. Unfortunate to see just how many kids don't care about their futures just Vaping and straight up just not doing any school work or the bare minimum at an extremely low quality. I personally find it annoying just how many sports you have to participate in P.E is enough and Athletics. Cross country should be optional! Speaking of P.E its a very toxic class as boys can be very competitive but they take the loss out on the people who just try stay out the way and not get on peoples nerves it makes you feel quite bad... Obviously bullying is a thing at Shirley but the teachers barely do anything to help if they see it. Obviously some do It just depends on what teachers are around at the time. Over all a good school, with problems like all schools but does the trick builds you up to be a overall good bloke. Recommend if you can handle the jandal :) (Just Did the cross country horrible worst event in the whole school poor weather for it just absolutely horrible >:( People being complete idiots, finished after school ended!!!) Just like to add we had a lockdown which was handled very well a man who was clearly not in the right state of mind came in but yeah handled very well :)"
"I went to Shirley Boys' in 1958 at the North Parade address. In my day, discipline ruled supreme and the use of the cane was certainly excessive. Morning assembles were like attending a funeral - the only thing missing was the coffin. I lost all my confidence at SBHS and it took me years to find it again. I hated it."
"Bad. Lets not kid ourselves the building looks awful and is completely inefficient. There is a lack of proper hallways or walls to divide classrooms so you will literally have a 3 different classes being run in the same room for some reason. the individual class layouts are also laughably horrible. Who ever made this school is completely incompetent, A 12 year old kid who plays Roblox could of designed a more efficient and better looking school. Other than the terrible pretentious design of the school the students are generally trashy or just plain weird. Very cliquey. The only good thing about this school was just some of the staff were good and passionate about teaching, that's about it. If you want to go to a decent state school then go to Burnside high."
"The new school looks beautiful even though I went to the old one down in North Parade. Great to see they've got the fantastic sporting facilities nearby at QE2. I'll eternally miss the old school, and the original QE2 :( I hope the new school has squash courts. Best times of my life were had there! To fat and slow to play now!"
