Foundation for Arable Research (FAR)
About the Business
Welcome to the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) located in Christchurch, New Zealand. As an establishment and point of interest, FAR is dedicated to supporting arable farmers in New Zealand by creating new knowledge, tools, and technologies to promote responsible and profitable farming practices.
FAR funds and contributes to research programs, often in collaboration with government-funded organizations and universities. Our involvement in specific research programs is driven by the interests of New Zealand growers. We also use levy funds to secure additional government funding through programs like the Sustainable Food Fibre Futures Fund.
At FAR, we understand the importance of protecting our environment and ensuring the future of the arable sector. That's why we have implemented an Environmental and Social Best Practice Strategy, which provides a framework for research, development, and extension activities aimed at safeguarding essential resources.
Arable farmers are the unsung heroes of the primary sector, contributing significantly to the New Zealand economy with a worth of $2.1 billion. Through the production of grain, seed, and other crops, these farmers play a crucial role in our food system.
We are proud to introduce ProductionWise, developed by Regrow Ag, as a valuable tool for farmers and advisers. ProductionWise offers crop record keeping and support tools to promote efficiency, sustainability, and profitability in modern farming enterprises.
FAR's research and extension portfolio covers a wide range of topics, from field-based crop agronomy trials to international collaborations and the crops of the future. This portfolio is updated annually and can adapt to emerging research needs, such as biosecurity incursions or regional issues. We publish results throughout the year via various means, including hard copy and electronic publications, and prepare Annual Research Reports.
In collaboration with the Herbage Seed Subsection of Federated Farmers, we have updated the ryegrass seed crops cost of production spreadsheet for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
The Government has recently announced the next three regions to implement freshwater farm plans (FWFPs) in early 2024: Otago, the West Coast, and Manawatū-Whanganui.
If you missed any of our field days or field walks, you can find the booklets on our website to catch up on the valuable information shared.
We are grateful for the support of FAR levy payers, who have declared their commitment to continued investment in research and extension for the arable industry.
Stay informed about arable crop development and actions across New Zealand with Crop Action, our platform that provides regular updates.
The voting for the 2023 FAR referendum has closed, and we are pleased with the overall voter turnout. Postal votes are still being accepted, and we hope to announce the results soon.
The AIMI survey of New Zealand cereal growers, as of July 1, 2023, is now available online.
For resources related to sustainable food production from plants, particularly for schools, we emphasize the connections between healthy soils, invertebrates, birds, and plants that enable the production of wholesome foods while minimizing environmental impacts.
Our weather platform offers an interactive weather map with regional forecast data for the next 14 days, as well as accumulated weather data for the season. It also provides access to weather-based decision-making tools, such as the aphid model and the cocksfoot downy mildew model.
Congratulations to all the winners at the 2023 Arable Awards in Christchurch. The event was attended by 600 growers and industry representatives, making it a memorable night.
Freshwater Farm Plan (FWFP) regulations are now live in parts of Waikato and Southland, ensuring responsible management of water resources.
Environment Canterbury is pleased with its observations of winter grazing practices across the Ashburton and Waikmakariri Districts.
We invite arable farmers to participate in Growers Leading Change, our knowledge exchange program that encourages the consideration, development, and introduction of new ideas, technologies, and ways of working.
