Welcome to Lincoln University Science South Building, a prominent establishment located in the picturesque town of Canterbury, Lincoln, New Zealand. This state-of-the-art institution serves as a point of interest and a university, catering to students, researchers, and the wider community.
Situated in the south-eastern corner of our campus, the Science South Building stands out with its distinctive red hue and sun-louvred design. It is home to the Agricultural Sciences department, which is part of the esteemed Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This building encompasses research spaces, laboratories, offices, collaboration areas, and social spaces, providing a conducive environment for academic pursuits and scientific exploration.
The construction of this new animal science building began in June 2020, replacing the previous structures that were damaged by earthquakes. The project was completed in July 2021, showcasing the institution's commitment to modern infrastructure and cutting-edge facilities.
To mark the official opening of the Science South Building, we were honored to have the presence of Minister of Research, Science, and Innovation, Hon Dr Megan Woods. With enthusiasm, she cut the ceremonial ribbon in front of an appreciative audience comprising dignitaries, staff, students, and members of the science community. Dr. Woods expressed her anticipation for the groundbreaking research that would be conducted by Lincoln's renowned animal scientists in this new facility.
At the opening event, Green MP Eugenie Sage, representing Climate Change Minister James Shaw, commended the University's sustainability goals and applauded the numerous sustainable features of the building. The Science South Building is built to Level 4 green star standard, reflecting our commitment to environmental responsibility. It boasts a roof-mounted solar array capable of generating 60.3 kW of clean energy, as well as eco-friendly wool carpets and insulation.
This building is the first of two new science facilities that will revolutionize learning and research spaces at Lincoln University. Equipped with the latest technology and resources, these facilities will empower the brightest minds in land-based scientific pursuits to tackle the world's most pressing environmental challenges. Our focus lies in supporting research and education activities aimed at developing higher-value products, enhancing environmental performance, and building more prosperous communities. These facilities will play a crucial role in New Zealand's transition to a productive, low-emissions economy.
