Southern Ballet & Dance Theatre
About the Business
Welcome to Southern Ballet & Dance Theatre, located at 108 Carlyle Street in Christchurch, New Zealand. As an establishment, point of interest, and school, Southern Ballet is dedicated to providing the highest quality training in classical ballet technique.
Founded in 1974 by Miss Lorraine Peters, Southern Ballet has built an outstanding reputation, with many students achieving distinction in their careers as dancers. Our students have performed both nationally and internationally, reaching principal status in prestigious dance companies.
At Southern Ballet, we are proud to be affiliated with the British Ballet Organisation, The Royal Academy of Dance, and the New Zealand Academy of Modern Dance. These affiliations demand a high standard of both our teachers and students, and our training syllabi are committed to achieving that standard.
We offer dance classes for students of all ages and levels. Our classes cater to Beginner students (ages 3-5), Junior students (ages 5-12), Senior students (ages 12 and up), and even Adults. For dedicated students, we have our own Ballet & Modern Dance Companies, as well as Pre-Professional Programs for those aspiring to have a career in dance.
Our philosophy at Southern Ballet is to train dancers through the enjoyment of learning dance. We believe in inspiring confidence in all our students, developing their movement and deportment skills, and above all, widening their imagination and appreciation of music from classical ballet to modern jazz.
Join us for our exciting dance extravaganza, featuring performances by Southern Ballet's Senior, Intermediate, and Junior Jazz Companies. Experience the magic of classical, jazz, and contemporary dance in our Gala Performance.
Come visit us at 108 Carlyle Street in Sydenham, Christchurch, New Zealand. We look forward to sharing the joy of dance with you.

Reviews
"When I was still learning dance, I remember (sadly) that I was bullied alot at this dance studio it ws mainly about my body size, I wasn't unheathly I just wasn't the skinny flat stomached dancer that they would implate into our heads. The uniforms only really fit if you were the skinny flat stomached dancer. The staff often ignored the bullying , yet they would single you out if you did something wrong. I do have good memories but the bad ones stick hard. I left this studio when I was 8 and now four years later, the trauma of the bullying stuck. If you want to learn dance I would recommend levings school of dance. But Southern ballet is good I will give them that but otherwise they are horrible mentally"
