About the Business
Welcome to the Department of Pathology, located at Christchurch, Riccarton Avenue, 2. As an establishment dedicated to health and biomedical science, we are an esteemed point of interest and a part of the University of Otago, Christchurch campus.
At our department, we are proud to conduct internationally-renowned research in pathology and biomedical science. This research forms the foundation for our award-winning teaching of postgraduate research students and undergraduate medical students. We are committed to providing a high-quality education that prepares our students for successful careers in research, diagnostics, or biotechnology.
We are always excited to hear from enthusiastic and highly-motivated students with backgrounds in medical or biomedical science. Our PhD, master's, and honours programmes offer hands-on research experience that is essential for your future career. Whether you aspire to become a researcher, diagnostician, or work in the field of biotechnology, our programmes will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge.
Within our department, we have seven independent research groups, each specializing in a different area of biomedical science. These groups are at the forefront of their respective fields and contribute significantly to the advancement of knowledge in pathology and biomedical science. Additionally, our members are actively involved with various research centres and networks as directors or principal investigators, further enhancing our collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to research.
In recognition of our commitment to excellence, the Department was awarded the University's Postgraduate Research Culture Excellence Award in 2018. This accolade showcases our dedication to fostering a vibrant and supportive research environment that encourages innovation and collaboration.
Furthermore, we are honored to host Prof Christine Winterbourn, who holds the distinction of being the first woman to receive The Royal Society's prestigious Rutherford Medal. Prof Winterbourn's expertise and contributions to the field of pathology are invaluable, and her presence within our department further enhances our reputation as a leading institution in the field.
While our focus is global, we recognize that certain health challenges persist in specific regions. For example, leprosy remains a significant problem in Pacific nations such as Kiribati. Through our research and collaborations, we strive to address these pressing health issues and make a positive impact on the lives of individuals and communities.
