Te Hono Ki Kokiri

Te Hono Ki Kokiri is an establishment and point of interest located at Lower Hutt, Wicklow Grove, 6 in New Zealand. The institution, inspired by Kaumatua, aims to restore and develop the Māori language and customs within families. Te Kōhanga Reo, a part of Te Hono Ki Kokiri, focuses on the total well-being of children and their families.

Managed by Kokiri Marae, Te Kōhanga Reo has been operating since 1978 in the greater Hutt Valley area. The spacious facility caters to two age groups, with a separate area for children aged up to two years old and another for those aged two to five years old. The Kōhanga Reo is licensed to accommodate 25 children under two and 50 children over two. Qualified Kaiako are employed, and staff are provided with opportunities for professional development.

The Kōhanga Reo operates from 8am to 4pm on weekdays, including school holidays, and offers extended hours from 7am to 5pm by special arrangement. Additionally, Te Hono Ki Kokiri provides a pick-up and drop-off service for children upon request.

The purpose-built facility is located in a cul-de-sac, ensuring limited traffic and a safe environment. It is situated on the edge of a park with excellent playground facilities. Te Hono itself is fully fenced, providing ample space for outdoor play.

Paparakau Te Kōhanga Reo, another branch of Kokiri Marae, operates in a Marae-type environment with open spaces and a separate area for children under two. The founders, Millie and Ginger Te Maro, dedicated countless hours to the establishment and development of this facility. Kokiri Marae continues to manage and support Paparakau even after the passing of Millie and Ginger.

Paparakau is licensed to accommodate eight children under two and 22 children aged two to five. Qualified Kaiako are employed, and staff are provided with opportunities for professional development. The Kōhanga Reo operates from 8am to 4.30pm on weekdays, including school holidays.
