Birchville Dam
About the Business
Welcome to Birchville Dam, a historic establishment and point of interest located in Moonshine Valley, Wellington, New Zealand. This iconic tourist attraction holds a special place in the region's history and serves as a reminder of the importance of water supply in Upper Hutt Borough.
The story of Birchville Dam dates back to the early 20th century when the Upper Hutt Town Board purchased the land surrounding the stream in March 1914. The purpose was to establish a water supply reserve that would cater to the growing needs of the borough. By April of the same year, the dam was operational, providing a reliable water source to the Upper Hutt community.
The construction of Birchville Dam was entrusted to MG Templeton, who was awarded the contract in April 1930. The renowned Wellington consulting engineer, Henry Featherston Toogood, oversaw the project, ensuring its successful completion. Assisting him was the diligent Clerk of Works, John Cudby. The project faced some challenges, leading to an extension of the contract period in November 1930 and the need for an additional loan of 10% of the contract price in February 1931.
Birchville Dam is an impressive concrete arch dam boasting a radius of 27.5 meters and a crest length of 40 meters (with an arch length of 46 meters). Standing at approximately 15 meters in height, the dam's infill of boulders at its base protects against scour, giving it a slightly lower appearance. As you explore the area, you may notice remnants of the original 12-inch (300 millimeter) pipeline, which transported water from the dam into the borough.
The picturesque lake formed behind Birchville Dam has a rich history of its own. Over time, it has partially silted up, adding to the charm and character of the surroundings. The tranquil beauty of the lake and the surrounding landscape make it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
Visiting Birchville Dam provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the region's past and appreciate the engineering marvel that brought essential water supply to Upper Hutt Borough. Whether you're interested in exploring the remnants of the original pipeline or simply taking in the scenic beauty, Birchville Dam is a must-visit destination in Moonshine Valley.
