Space Place at Carter Observatory
About the Business
Welcome to Space Place at Carter Observatory, a must-visit establishment and museum located at 40 Salamanca Road in Wellington, New Zealand. As a prominent tourist attraction and point of interest, we offer an extraordinary experience for visitors of all ages.
Our main highlight is the stunning digital, full-dome planetarium screen. It showcases a diverse range of shows carefully selected from the best available nationally and internationally. From the adorable Ngā Tautangata to the spectacular images of the planets, each show includes a live presentation of the night sky over Aotearoa, providing a captivating and educational experience.
In addition to our planetarium, we invite you to explore our engaging galleries. Discover a do-it-yourself Black Hole and interactive displays featuring asteroids that you can pick up. Marvel at a real marama rock and learn about the historic Apollo missions of the late 1960s. Experience the thrill of a rocket blast-off and step inside the Tūhura Space Module to feel what it's like to be inside a spaceship.
Make sure to visit our Matariki theatre, where you can immerse yourself in the stories of how Māori navigated the vast Pacific Ocean using the ngā whetū (stars). Learn about the significance of Matariki, the astronomical event that marks the Māori New Year.
Please note that for the safety of our visitors, children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. We also highly recommend booking in advance for school groups and tour groups to ensure availability.
If you're arriving by car, Wilson parking is conveniently available at 1 Upland Road. We also have limited parking spaces outside Space Place reserved specifically for mobility permit holders.
For any inquiries or to make a booking, please contact us at T: 64 4 910 3140 or E: spaceplace@experiencewellington.org.nz. You can find us at the top of the Cable Car, just a short stroll from the terminus.
Lastly, we invite you to support our conservation, acquisition, and educational programs, as well as the maintenance of our iconic buildings, by making a donation to one of our museums. Your contribution will play a vital role in preserving our rich heritage. Donate now or call 04 472 8904 to discuss donating an object.

Reviews
"A small but compact display of the history and wonders of the space, the interactive features are great for the kids."
"Have wanted to visit Space Place while also enjoying the cable car, was elated when I saw that a combo was available for only $20. It even included a show at the planetarium! The host in the planetarium was fun-loving and had a really soothing voice in terms of presenting. Would highly recommend going into one of the shows."
"I visited a few years ago and it was awesome. Unfortunately I didn't book in advance and had to wait until the next exhibit but walking around the beautiful garden was the perfect way to spend my time while waiting. It was informative and the interactive parts of the observatory were fun. Great for kids, and the adults can enjoy it too. I definitely recommend checking it out."
"I visited on a cloudless evening so was able to have a look through the 150 year old telescope as well as the planetarium show. The exhibition is interesting, more geared to a younger audience, but lots of info about Kiwi contributions to astronomy and space exploration."
"Interesting place, which can be found within the botanical gardens. Has plenty of information throughout. Good place to have a wonder. There is an entrance fee. A great place to bring kids. A worthwhile place to visit."
