Tussock Ridge Farm Tours
About the Business
Welcome to Tussock Ridge Farm Tours, located in the beautiful Ohariu Valley in Wellington, New Zealand. Our establishment offers an unforgettable 3 1/2 hour 4WD journey across three privately-owned farms, featuring 6000 sheep, 400 cattle, and 40 horses. But that's not all - these farms are also home to Wellington's newest wind farm, boasting 26 wind turbines that power the entire Wellington City.
At Tussock Ridge Farm Tours, we believe in providing an intimate and authentic experience of farm life in New Zealand. That's why our tours are exclusively for small groups of 2-6 people. This allows you to have personal interactions with our tour guide, Ward, who is not only your guide but also the farmer of the land. You'll have the opportunity to ask him any questions and gain insights into the daily workings of a New Zealand farm.
To make your experience even more convenient, we offer a pick-up and drop-off service from Wellington Railway Station, Wellington CBD hotels, and Wellington i-SITE centre. Alternatively, you can drive out to Tussock Ridge Farm yourself and enjoy a discounted rate.
During the tour, you'll have the chance to feed wild Kaimanawa horses, encounter wild eels, stand beneath a towering 111-meter wind turbine, and indulge in a delightful morning tea at our Shepherd's cabin. Perched on the cliffs overlooking the Cook Strait and South Island, this cabin offers breathtaking views that showcase the natural beauty of New Zealand.
One of the highlights of our tour is the opportunity to feed our herd of 20 Kaimanawa horses. These majestic creatures are native to New Zealand and are descendants of the first wild horses discovered in the country in 1876. It's a truly unique experience to get up close and personal with these remarkable animals.
Don't just take our word for it - here's what one of our satisfied customers had to say: "My husband and I and our friends from Florida took this tour together after I had read the reviews on TripAdvisor. The four of us met over 25 years ago working in the travel industry, and needless to say we have been on many tours in many cities across the world together. Our day with Ward, the owner of Tussock Ridge Farm, will go down as one of the most memorable tours we've ever done."

"What an amazing tour! It was fascinating to see a working sheep farm in NZ. The views are spectacular, the animals are beautiful, and our guide, Ward, was warm and friendly. I would not hesitate to recommend this tour to anyone who visits this beautiful country. We are so grateful to have had this opportunity to visit Tussock Ridge Farm."
"This was an exceptional experience that we highly recommend. Not only do you have the opportunity to see the breathtaking landscapes of the region, but you also get to learn about the important role of farming in NZ, sustainable farming practices, wind-powered energy, and the animals that call Tussock Ridge home. Ward is a wealth of information and extremely charismatic, and it was amazing to being able to get the tour from the expert who runs the farm. His passion and love for the farm is evident at every turn, both in how he talks about the land and as you see it for yourself, and makes this tour unforgettably special. This was the highlight of our time in Wellington, and we encourage other visitors to go on this must-do tour!"
"Awesome tour and unforgettable memories! Our guide, Ward, showed us around his farm and the turbines in his jeep. Very authentic sharings of his experiences as a farmer, the animals and preserving environment. Anyone visiting Wellington should definitely not miss this!"
