Oratia has a fascinating past, dating back to the 1860s when it was first settled. Land parcels were granted to new immigrants, and remnants of this early settlement can still be found today. Cochrane's orchard, one of the earliest in the area, may no longer exist, but its legacy lives on.
Step back in time at Sunnydale, the oldest surviving residence in West Auckland, built around 1860 using Kauri timber milled on-site. Oratia Cemetery, with burial sites dating from 1867 onwards, offers a glimpse into the area's history and holds historical and visual significance.
Thomas Parr, a pioneer orchardist and nurseryman, established Albion Vale, a plant nursery that now stands as a Category I Listed Building. This beautifully restored house was once a renowned restaurant in Auckland and is now accompanied by the small Oratia Folk Museum, originally a settler cottage built in 1870.
The Oratia Valley holds a special place in the community's heart, settled by Dalmatian migrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their orchards and vineyards led to Oratia being known as the fruit bowl of Auckland. Today, the community spirit remains strong, with a sense of belonging and shared history.
While some of the original orchards have disappeared, Oratia has evolved into a vibrant community with a variety of businesses and homes. The area continues to embrace its natural surroundings and has produced notable individuals such as Hugh Redgrove, a plant breeder, and Geoff Davidson, a conservationist.
Education is well-catered for in Oratia, with Oratia District School providing primary education for the area since 1882. The school has a high decile rating and serves a catchment area extending to the coast. "Beautiful hall and grounds. Great for kid’s parties as it has a playground too!"
"A lot of history in the space for us being locals from 21st birthdays to funerals"
"Lovely old hall, we've used it for our kids birthday party afew times now. Has everything you need, a small kitchen, tables chairs bathrooms parking outside and a playground that's gated to keep the little ones in. Hiring the hall is super easy and will be doing it again forsure."
"Have had many childrens birthdays in the small hall...it is perfect with the playground right there, fully fenced in space to stop the kids running into the parking lot and also enough space inside incase it rains...has always been clean and tidy when I have arrived to set up."
"Nice place to hire for venue. Only downside was that the previous people who hired hall the night before left all their stuff in the hall and was a complete mess. Very stressful trying to setup a 5 year old party when they are still clearing stuff out at 10am and party starts at 11am. Hall is tidy and has good bathroom amenities. Kitchen is dated but works. Overall good place. Would hire again."
