About Freemans Bay Kindergarten
Welcome to Freemans Bay Kindergarten, located at 16 Tahuna Street in Auckland, New Zealand. Our institution is not just a school, but also a point of interest and a place of establishment. Nestled in park-like surroundings on the edge of Western Park, our kindergarten is a haven for young learners.
At Freemans Bay Kindergarten, we are proud to hold the prestigious Green-Gold Enviroschools status, showcasing our dedication to looking after the planet. We believe in recycling, reusing, repurposing, and using natural resources whenever possible. Our passion for sustainability is ingrained in our curriculum and daily practices.
We understand that children learn best through play, which is why we have woven pre-literacy and pre-numeracy skills into our curriculum in a meaningful and enjoyable way. Our impressive library is a favorite among our tamariki (children), who love to have stories read to them regularly.
As a kindergarten, we are committed to te reo and Tikanga Māori. Our kaiako (teachers) use te reo Māori daily and engage in Tikanga Māori practices that honor te tiriti (the Treaty of Waitangi). We celebrate diversity and warmly welcome cultural celebrations from our kindergarten community.
Immersive natural resources are a highlight of our kindergarten. With a large sandpit, climbing equipment, and a waterfall, children can engage with and engineer the flow of water in a natural and hands-on way. Pretend play is valued, and we nurture a deep curiosity about plants and nature through our gardening and composting program, as well as our two worm farms.
At Freemans Bay Kindergarten, we believe in learning together. Tamariki engage in group learning during morning mat time and spontaneously throughout the day as we follow their emergent interests. Our skilled kaiako support and scaffold children's interests, strengths, and aspirations, working alongside them to grow their skills and positive dispositions. We also implement the Incredible Years Teacher Programme, which supports young children with self-regulation and their social, emotional, and academic competence.
We invite you to come and visit us and become part of our amazing kindergarten community. Our program offers numerous opportunities for children to be challenged and develop more complex learning. Literacy, math, and science activities are seamlessly incorporated into their play. Children demonstrate cooperation and negotiation skills during play activities, and those with additional educational needs receive excellent support through individual educational plans.
Our kindergarten operates from Monday to Friday, from 8.30am to 2.30pm. Our office hours are from 8am to 4.45pm, Monday to Friday. We are closed during term breaks and public holidays. For updates on what's happening in our extended network, head over to our AKA blog.
We look forward to welcoming you to Freemans Bay Kindergarten, where learning is fun, sustainable, and inclusive.

Reviews of Freemans Bay Kindergarten
"Fabulous, nurturing kindergarten. Amazing diversity, and genuinely caring staff that have helped my two children to flourish. Love the free play, focus on nature and the stimulating yet peaceful outdoor and indoor environments."
"I can absolutely recommend Freemans Bay Kindergarten! The staff are amazing and were able to instill a love for learning in my child, which really made the transition to the next school so much easier. The head teacher, Karen is really a remarkable leader who allowed my child to grow independently while ensuring that she always felt able to ask for help. A lot of thought was put into each daily activity. My child developed a range of skills, I had never even attempted in my life. From woodwork, to baking, drilling to playing instruments, Karen always aims to ensure the children develop holistically."
"We were lucky enough to enrol our daughter at Freemans Bay Kindergarten a few years back. It was such a postive experience. The staff were so attentive to the kids needs. The interior and exterior spaces were creativly organised, giving lots of options for play and learning. From a parents point of view the staff, and especialy Karen, the head teacher, were very approachable and enthusiastic. Our daughter loved each day there, it was sad to have to move on to primary school. We still keep in touch, and are happy to hear its still thriving. - Jackie, Alex and Zara"
"Freemansbay kindergarten is really good facility , i had excellent experience for my three kids . All the staff was helping and caring. Never faced any issue there ."
"My two children both attended Freemans Bay Kindergarten from the ages of 3 through to 5. The staff there are outstanding and very professional when it comes to nurturing and guiding the children on their early learning journey. While the philosophy is based around learning through play, there is also a kind of gentle discipline and responsibility learning applied by the daily routine which included good hygiene, organising one’s own things and tidying up themselves after a hard day of play. Freemans Bay Kindergarten also encourages and somewhat embraces a collaborative approach with parents which I really appreciated. There were so many learning opportunities created by countless internal projects, outside trips and performances by various local talents that I found it easy to expand on those learning experiences at home thereby increasing the educational impact of the Kindergarten’s initiatives. For me a Kindergarten (as opposed to a Childcare Centre), is all about preparing children for School and I can say without any hesitation Freeman’s Bay Kindergarten did that for my 2 Children exceptionally well."
