Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary
360 Linton-Piggoreet Road, Happy Valley, Victoria, Australia
About Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary
Welcome to Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary, a hidden gem nestled in Happy Valley, along the scenic Linton-Piggoreet Road in Australia. As an establishment, park, point of interest, and tourist attraction, Clarkesdale Sanctuary offers a unique experience for nature enthusiasts and bird lovers alike.
Originally donated by passionate conservationist Gordon Clarke, this sanctuary spans an impressive 535 hectares, with fifty hectares previously occupied by a pine plantation. Thanks to Clarke's vision and the support of the Victorian Government’s Biodiversity On-ground Action plan, the area has been transformed into a thriving habitat for native trees such as eucalyptus and wattle.
Today, Clarkesdale Sanctuary is home to over 150 species of woodland and wetland birds, including some threatened species like the Powerful Owl, Black-eared Cuckoo, and the Diamond Firetail. This sanctuary stands as a testament to nature's resilience, with Clarke's replanting efforts creating areas that benefit species like New Holland honeyeaters and red wattlebirds, making them more abundant here than in native forests.
Whether you visit during the vibrant Spring and Summer seasons or any other time of the year, Clarkesdale Sanctuary offers excellent birding opportunities. Witness the bustling activity of breeding and nesting birds, as well as the return of migratory species like the Common Greenshank and Horesfield’s Bronze-Cuckoos.
For those seeking a memorable camping experience, Clarkesdale offers several un-powered sites with convenient facilities such as showers and toilets. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature while enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of the sanctuary.
Located just under two hours west of Melbourne and about 40 kilometers from Ballarat, Clarkesdale is easily accessible via the Linton-Piggoreet Road, near the township of Linton on the Glenelg Highway. Whether you're driving a car, riding a bike, or even horseback riding, you'll find excellent year-round access to this nature haven.
If you're up for more adventure, the nearby Ballarat-Skipton Rail Trail offers a 53-kilometer path along the old railway line, passing by Clarkesdale Sanctuary. Recently upgraded with top-quality gravel surfaces, signage, seating, and rest huts, this trail is perfect for cyclists, walkers, and horse riders of all levels of experience. It's a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
At Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary, we understand the importance of preserving woodland bird populations, with over 40 species currently at risk of extinction. Our Woodland Birds Program aims to halt and reverse this alarming trend before it's too late. By visiting our sanctuary and supporting our efforts, you become an integral part of this crucial conservation mission.
As you explore the sanctuary, keep an eye out for the majestic Peregrine Falcons soaring above city streets, nesting on skyscraper ledges. Listen for the melodic and far-reaching song of the Rufous Whistler, one of Australia's finest songsters, echoing through the air.
We would like to acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Owners of the Country on which Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary resides. We recognize and appreciate the immense contribution of Indigenous people to the knowledge and conservation of Australia's remarkable birdlife.
Join us at Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary and experience the wonders of Australia's avian biodiversity. Submit your bird observations to Birdata and contribute to our ongoing research and conservation efforts. Reviews of Clarkesdale Bird Sanctuary
"Lovely place nice bird hide there great walking tracks very pretty erea lots of bird life and kangaroos"
"Wonderful location with great camping and birding."
"Clarkesdale Sanctuary is down Graded road by the creek crossing on the left. There are two bird hides around the lake.It is well signposted and the walk is lovely.Found more birds by the creek than at the lake.Worth the trip, really enjoyed this one"
"Stopped to check what the sanctuary is about. Camping is south of the road. Reception area is nice but looks unoccupied. Track to the campsites is 4WD only. The lake with the bird hides is to the north via Graded Road. You need to ford a stream to get to the entry. Bird watching would make more sense during dry weather when providing drinking water would lure the birds there for a snap. BTW Devil's Kitchen has a pair of nesting falcons..."
"Beautiful tranquil place to visit. Short walk or loop track. Toilets and parking available"
