About the Business
Welcome to the Sustainability Learning Centre, an innovative and visionary educational facility located in Mount Nelson, Tasmania. As an establishment, point of interest, and school, we offer a range of programs both on and off-site to promote sustainability and environmental awareness.
Situated adjacent to prominent reserves near the Hobart College campus, our centre is nestled within 65 hectares of bushland, which serves as a habitat for several threatened species. This natural setting provides a unique learning environment, allowing students to connect with nature and understand the importance of conservation.
The Sustainability Learning Centre is proud to host the Tasmanian offices and teaching programs of the Department for Education, Children and Young People's Manager of Sustainability Programs, Jenny Dudgeon, and Greening Australia. This collaboration ensures that our programs are well-rounded and aligned with sustainable practices.
Thanks to the support from the Australian Government's Department for Education, Children and Young People, Employment and Workplace Relations, as well as funding from Greening Australia and the Tasmanian Government, our centre was constructed with a focus on sustainability. In fact, we have achieved a 6-star rating under the Green Star rating system of the Green Building Council of Australia.
Our programs cover a wide range of topics, including climate change, biodiversity, renewable energy, water conservation, and environmental sustainability. Designed to inspire and enthuse students, these programs aim to encourage them to pursue careers in science or science-related fields. We also partner with other organizations to offer programs at schools and various sites across the state.
Aligned with the Australian Curriculum, our programs support the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority. By incorporating subjects such as Science, Geography, Maths, and English, we emphasize the importance of protecting the environment and creating a more ecologically and socially just world.
In addition to our regular programs, this year we are offering innovative early years programs that align strongly with the Early Years Learning Framework. Our bush kindergarten program and nature play/loose parts program have been highly popular, providing children with hands-on experiences in nature. We also offer the Aboriginal Sharers of Knowledge program, which provides unique, culturally aware learning opportunities on country and about country.
At the Sustainability Learning Centre, we are committed to providing resources that support sustainability education. Australian teachers can access educational materials through the Scootle website, which align with the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority.
We are proud to be a part of the Department for Education, Children and Young People, which oversees Child Safety, Youth Justice, Public Education, Out of Home Care, Libraries, and Child and Family Learning Centres. Our department is dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive learning environment for all.
