Butmaroo Farm Stay
About the Business
Welcome to Butmaroo Farm Stay, a hidden gem nestled in the picturesque countryside of Bungendore, Australia. Situated on 3000 acres of a working sheep and cattle farm, Butmaroo Station offers a unique experience for those seeking a tranquil retreat.
The name Butmaroo holds deep significance, as it is derived from the Aboriginal term for deep creek, which perfectly describes the creek that meanders through the property. Before European settlers arrived, this land belonged to the Ngarigo people, whose traditional lands stretched across southeast New South Wales.
The history of Butmaroo and the surrounding area dates back to the early 19th century. In 1824, explorer Allan Cunningham passed through Bungendore, and a year later, the first European settlers arrived. Captain Richard Brooks established a stock station in 1824, and one of his outstations was named "Bungadow." As the village began to grow in 1835, it was officially named Bungendore. By 1851, the population had reached 63, and the town flourished with the construction of a flour mill, hotels, and a courthouse. The arrival of the railway in 1885 further spurred the town's growth, attracting a population of 700.
Butmaroo Station has witnessed the changing tides of time, being advertised for sale in 1886 by its then owner, John Flynn. A school was built on the property in 1903, which later merged with the school at Gidleigh in 1923. The property changed hands multiple times until James Derbyshire Harrison purchased it in 1910.
During the early 20th century, rabbit trapping became a thriving industry in the Bungendore area. The town even had a rabbit-freezing plant, employing numerous workers and trappers. In one year alone, over 1.5 million rabbits were frozen at Bungendore.
In the 1950s, the Harrison family relinquished ownership of Butmaroo, and it changed hands several more times until its present owners acquired it in 2011. Since then, a restoration and renovation project has been underway, breathing new life into the historic buildings and preserving the natural landscape.
At Butmaroo Farm Stay, we offer boutique accommodation in our recently renovated workers cottages. These luxurious homes have been thoughtfully designed with simplicity and comfort in mind, showcasing the stunning farm backdrops. Additionally, we are currently restoring the 1940's Shearers quarters and a mountain couples cabin, which will provide a modern interpretation of the original buildings on this historic property.
Take a leisurely stroll down to Butmaroo Creek or one of the many beautiful dams dotted across the landscape. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of the peaceful valley, surrounded by native birds, grazing sheep, and cows. The breathtaking views and serene ambiance make Butmaroo Farm Stay the ideal destination for weekend getaways or longer retreats.
Our guests have raved about the amazingly quiet and peaceful location, praising the cleanliness of our accommodations and the warmth of our hosts. Join us at Butmaroo Farm Stay and experience the beauty and serenity of Australia's countryside.

"We stayed at the Stockman’s cottage and the location and cottage are really beautiful. The location is just perfect, it was so peaceful and a lovely fenced off garden for our toddler and puppy to explore. However there are some things I wish we’d known beforehand. The webpage says pet friendly but pets aren’t allowed inside the cottage - only the garden. We weren’t informed of this until the day before checking in and if I’d known, I wouldn’t have booked it. It was a really cold weekend and we were very uncomfortable with our 3 month old puppy sleeping outside. Secondly, it was really cold in the cottage. The cottage only has a single split system in the living and a wood fire. Due to having a toddler and asthma we didn’t want to light the fire and the split system was not at all sufficient to heat the bedrooms. I did send an email to the host in the morning requesting portable heaters but I didn’t receive a response until the late afternoon. This was partly my fault because I didn’t use the phone number provided but I assumed everyone has access to email on their mobiles. It is a working farm and I could have called but at that point we had decided to go home instead of staying the second night because we had been so uncomfortable the night before. Also, their is no wifi and only limited phone service depending on your carrier."
"Lovely stay. However, the place is listed as pets allowed but they’re not allowed in the house and outdoor garden area is not well fenced or have any kind of shelter for the pets to stay warm and safe."
"Amazing place to relax and spectacular views from the house. Excellent host. Rooms are clean and spacious. Definitely a place I would go back to."
"Butmaroo Stockman's Lodge is a large 4 BR house on a working farm. It has modern bathrooms, inside and outside eating areas, a really good kitchen and a large loungeroom. The weather wasn't kind during our visit but we still had a terrific time. We walked the farm roads and paddocks, introduced the grandkids to farm animals and did some amateur bird watching. We ordered a Butmaroo platter for Saturday lunch and it was fantastic - highly recommended."
"Very relaxing family stay for 6 adults, 1 child and 1 baby. Beautiful home, spotlessly clean, warm and welcoming. Home yard very safe for children, great opportunity to explore homestead paddocks and animals, fire pit a huge hit for both kids - sparklers and toasting marshmallows, and adults - perfect for a wine and/or beer. Penny and Pete very accessible and perfect hosts."
