About the Business
Welcome to Becoming Connected Counselling, located in the heart of Canberra at Garema Place. We are an establishment focused on providing health and well-being services, and we are proud to be a point of interest for individuals seeking support and guidance.
At Becoming Connected Counselling, we offer a unique therapeutic approach known as Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. In IFS therapy, you can expect to receive the utmost respect, empathy, attunement, care, and deep listening. We create a safe and supportive environment where you can share your story at your own pace, knowing that you will be heard with genuine curiosity, compassion, and understanding.
IFS therapy gently and effectively works with dysfunctional responses to trauma, helping you reconnect with your true self. We believe that everyone has eight core qualities - compassion, clarity, calm, curiosity, confidence, courage, creativity, and connectedness - which are our birthright. By returning to these core qualities, we can become the best version of ourselves. If you want to learn more about IFS therapy, you can find additional information on our website.
IFS therapy is applicable to individuals of all ages and can be beneficial in various life situations. While primarily aimed at individuals, it can also be instrumental in helping couples understand each other better. This therapy is highly effective in addressing and healing problems associated with childhood developmental or adult trauma. It offers a way out of persistent depressed states and helps you uncover the origins of anxiety, leading to real and permanent change within your psyche. IFS therapy also has a proven track record in bringing calm and balance to your system when dealing with disorders, addictions, or overwhelming emotional states. It promotes self-awareness and strengthens bonds within intimate, familial, and other relationships. Rest assured, IFS therapy is LGBTQIAP-friendly.
During a Becoming Connected Counselling session, your initial appointment will last an hour and 15 minutes, with follow-up sessions lasting one hour. These sessions provide an opportunity to deeply explore your life issues, allowing for a thorough connection to all parts of your system and facilitating healing. We maintain continuity between sessions, revisiting previous issues at the beginning of each session to aid integration and address related matters.
IFS therapy can be applied to single issues, allowing you to dip in and out of therapy as needed. However, many clients who have experienced the depth and comprehensive nature of this therapy choose to return for an extended series of sessions. Typically, a client can expect to meet for five to six sessions.
Our founder, Richard, has been counseling clients from the Canberra region since 2014, specializing in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and existential therapies. Over the past four years, Richard has also incorporated IFS therapy into his practice, offering clients a powerful tool for personal growth, presence, and decision-making. Richard holds a background in psychology and humanistic philosophy, having studied at prestigious institutions such as the University of Sussex, the ANU, UNE, and the University of Canberra. He is a Level 2 trained IFS practitioner and a clinical registrant of PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia).
We understand that accessibility is crucial, which is why we have two convenient locations in Canberra: Garema Place, Civic, and Cook. Additionally, we offer online sessions for clients located anywhere in the world. Please contact us via phone or email for further details.
Don't just take our word for it - our clients have experienced transformative counseling sessions with Richard. One client describes Richard's counseling style as comfortable and praises the transformative nature of the sessions. As someone who has been both a client and a counselor, this client can vouch for Richard's authenticity and expertise.

Reviews
"12 months into therapy with Richard and still feel no inclination to finish any time soon. Richard embodies authenticity and safety unlike much I have experienced in my life. I am particularly fond of his application of the IFS model - gentle, curious and welcoming whilst also being acutely perceptive and appropriately challenging. Whilst I'm positive his approach would be helpful to anyone looking for support, I can attest that he is distinctly well suited to working with the challenges of men."
