St Helena Secondary College
About the Business
St Helena Secondary College is a co-educational state secondary school located in Eltham North, just a short distance from Melbourne CBD. Led by Principal Karen Terry and her dedicated team of associate principals, assistant principals, and leading teachers/learning specialists, the school is committed to nurturing the growth and development of every student.
With a population of approximately 1,600 students, St Helena Secondary College is organized into three mini schools: Junior (Year 7), Middle (Years 8-9), and Senior (Years 10-12). These mini schools provide traditional yet stimulating and nurturing environments where skilled professionals offer personalized learning experiences to maximize progress and inspire potential.
The school's motto of "Daring to be excellent" influences the learning process and encourages students to become accomplished, resilient, and principled graduates who are equipped to succeed and contribute effectively in the digital age. The focus on student engagement is evident through a wide range of programs, including a robust Music and Performing Arts program, extensive Camps program, House and student leadership involvement opportunities, community service, sports, and various clubs. These programs facilitate learning on every level and ensure that students are actively engaged in their education.
To give prospective students and their families a glimpse into the St Helena Secondary College community, the school offers a virtual college tour. Led by Mr. Shaun Isbister, the Junior School Principal, this tour showcases the school in action and highlights the many offerings and opportunities available at St Helena Secondary College.
Principal Karen Terry has been privileged to lead the St Helena community for the past decade. With a background in teaching English, Humanities, Theatre, and Psychology, she strongly believes in the holistic development of students. She is committed to ensuring that every child can flourish and become a happy, healthy, and responsible individual who can contribute positively to the broader community.
St Helena Secondary College takes pride in its heritage, appreciating its proud past, understanding its dynamic present, and anticipating its bright future. The school also acknowledges and respects the traditional custodians of the land, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. The school pays its respects to their Elders, both past and present, and values the memories, traditions, culture, and hopes they hold. St Helena Secondary College was built on their land, and as the school community shares knowledge, teaching, and learning, they strive to show respect through the relationships formed and the connection with the beautiful land surrounding them.
Once a member of the St Helena community, always a member of the St Helena community. The school encourages St Helena Alumni to share their stories and stay connected. The upcoming Alumni Stories page will profile the post-school journeys of St Helena Alumni, showcasing where they are now, their tips for success, and their advice for current and future generations of St Helena students as they dare to be excellent.

"I do not like it here. They care more about my shoes then my mental health."
"I got dress coded for wearing a ring that wasn’t flat topped Cares too much about socks, why are you looking at my feet anyway??"
"Fantastic school with a wide range of subjects on offer whether your child is sports orientated or creative like art or textiles or more hands-on like being motor mechanic or woodwork or more academic. Passionate teachers who are dedicated and approachable. The leadership team are also very approachable and happy to have them contact you. Responds to any queries very promptly and follows up issues. The office staff are also very helpful. My child has special needs and they organised an Aide for her & Special Provisions for sitting exams and the GAT - and are very supportive with whatever she needs. We meet with the Inclusion Team (who support students with Special Needs) every term and go over any issues that have arisen and to make sure that my child is happy with the supports in place or if we need to change something. My child has been very happy at this school and is now in Year 12. The school has had significant building upgrades (which are still continuing at the moment) and recently opened a new gym so the facilities are really good. I really loved how supportive the school was for my child during our COVID Lockdowns. The teachers were happy to be contacted anytime - even well into the evening - and one of my child's teachers even sent Care Packages to her students which made my child's day. The school also organised Challenges during Lockdown like walking each day, cooking a meal etc. with prizes for the students. Those things really helped keep my child motivated during such a difficult time. Have no hesitation in recommending this school."
"Such a supportive environment for the students, great communication, and very dedicated staff! Their technology is so modern 1:1 very good social media presence. It is clear that St Helena really cares about their students and their learning! Thank you for your dedication to our young people!!"
