Masuya 12/14 O'Connell Street, Sydney, New South Wales 2000
About the Business
Masuya Restaurant, located on O'Connell Street in Sydney, is a truly unique establishment that combines delicious food with a rich cultural history. Situated in a building designated as a cultural asset, Masuya occupies the same space where Kanematsu Gosho, a pioneer of Australia-Japan trades, had his office in 1980.
Since its opening in 1993, Masuya Restaurant has continuously evolved to provide an exceptional dining experience. In 2006, a full renovation was implemented, breathing new life into the space. One of the standout features is the approximately five-meter-long sushi counter, designed by architect Robert Toland. The counter, adorned in a vibrant 'kabuki red' color, is inspired by the stage of kabuki, captivating not only local Australian customers but also individuals from various backgrounds.
When it comes to the culinary offerings, Masuya prides itself on its diverse selection of sushi. A showcase displays over 20 different sushi ingredients every day, including locally sourced fish that is purchased on the very day it is served. The restaurant also carefully selects other premium ingredients such as wagyu beef, free-range pork, and seasonal vegetables. The attention to detail extends beyond the food, as the specially designed tableware by Malcolm Greenwood and the Tasmanian Oak tables contribute to the restaurant's inviting atmosphere.
To complement the delectable cuisine, Masuya offers a range of carefully selected high-quality wines. Whether you are a wine connoisseur or simply looking to enhance your dining experience, the knowledgeable staff will guide you in choosing the perfect pairing.
Masuya is not just a restaurant; it is a destination that allows you to immerse yourself in the world of Japanese hospitality. Whether you are visiting for a special occasion or simply looking to indulge in an authentic Japanese dining experience, Masuya is the perfect choice.
In addition to the main restaurant, Masuya also operates other establishments, including Izakaya Masuya, Izakaya Michi, Miso World Square, and Miso Green Square. Each venue offers its own unique atmosphere and culinary delights, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Visit Masuya Restaurant and embark on a culinary journey that combines tradition, innovation, and unparalleled hospitality. Experience the harmony of flavors, the warmth of the staff, and the captivating ambiance that has made Masuya a beloved institution in Sydney.

"Had the daily special, which usually is not on the menu and sold fairly quickly. Their lunch is pretty popular, and most of the times there will be a queue."
"Sushi and sashimi were okay, tempura was too oily, and service had deteriorated significantly since my last visit 5 years ago. The waiter was spraying cleaning liquid on the next table while we were eating, and the smell of the spray came across to our table. They did not have beer on tap, and we had to ask for water twice before it arrived"
"Had much higher expectations and got disappointed. Atmosphere was nice and the staff were attentive. Sushi platter was just ok. Long delay between serving food for each person. Unagi don was too small. Daily fish nitsuke was half raw, chewy, and missing all other ingredients visible on the menu. After asking, the response was as simple as sorry we have changed the recipe. Won't try again."
"I love Japanese food. My friend took me to this awesome hidden Japanese restaurant near Wynyard (O'Connell St) The kingfisher was out of this world! Super fresh and full of flavour as it melts in your mouth. My usual fav is the Agedashi Tofu, crispy and semi sweet. The best part is the massive sashimi platter. So fresh and tasted divine! Will want to go back just to have their Bento boxes... looks tasty!!"
"The food was good but Iโm very worried about the hygiene issues. As we were sitting in front of the sushi bar and next to the entrance of the kitchen, there were so many small flies on the wall (shown as those small dark spots on the wall) and some of them flying over and around our food."
