About the Business
Welcome to Hunky Dory Fish & Chips South Yarra, located on Chapel Street in the heart of Australia's vibrant city. Our establishment is not just a restaurant, but a point of interest and a beloved institution for locals and visitors alike.
At Hunky Dory, we have a rich history deeply rooted in the love for seafood. Our founder, Greg, grew up on the water, learning the art of fishing from his Greek father and grandfather on their commercial fishing boat. During school holidays, Greg could be found behind the counter at his family's fish and chip shop, where his passion for seafood flourished.
Greg's father, a seafood-lover himself, was a familiar face at the Melbourne Fish Market for many years. When Hunky Dory opened its doors in 2004, Greg's family stood by his side, proudly wearing Hunky Dory t-shirts. In fact, Greg's grandfather continued to wear one in-store until he was 91!
Over the years, our Hunky family has grown, and we are incredibly grateful for our dedicated team who spread the Hunky Love every day. Our mission has always been to shake up the Fish & Chip game and give it a healthy spin. We believe that everyone should have a seat at our table, whether they prefer a succulent piece of grilled salmon or a crispy potato cake.
Our menu offers a wide range of options to satisfy all tastes. From fillets of fish topped with Latino or African sauce to marinated seafood platters with Mediterranean flavors, we have something for everyone. We even cater to plant-based eaters with our fishless fish fillets and a variety of vegetarian options.
In addition to our delicious seafood, we offer other mouthwatering dishes such as panko parmesan and parsley crumbed fish fillet, premium Angus beef burgers, and vibrant salads packed with fresh ingredients. We take pride in using high-quality ingredients and preparing everything in our kitchen to ensure the freshness and taste of every meal.
At Hunky Dory, we understand the importance of dietary needs and strive to accommodate them. While we cannot guarantee 100% gluten/nut/fructose-free and vegetarian or vegan meals due to our shared kitchen, our team will do their best to guide you through the options available. If you have serious intolerances, we recommend refraining from ordering to prioritize your health and satisfaction.
For your convenience, we offer take-away services and package all meals to maintain their freshness. Whether you're grabbing a quick bite or planning a large order for a special occasion or function, we are here to fulfill your needs.
Please note that prices are subject to change, and our fresh fish is hand-filleted each morning by our skilled Hunky team. While we strive to serve boneless fillets, we cannot guarantee it 100%.
Join us at Hunky Dory Fish & Chips South Yarra for a memorable dining experience filled with love, delicious food, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

"Good portion of food with fresh ingredient but taste is just okay"
"Another amazing place for fresh fish and chips. Staff and owner were friendly and amazing. Loved the food."
"The staff here are beyond amazing; so kind and friendly. True customer service experts. The fish was cooked well, the chips were perfectly crunchy, and our order was packed with care. The online ordering system is super easy, and my fussy four year old LOVES the fish bites because they come with a smile. Cannot recommend this specific Hunky Dory enough!"
"I came here for dinner on a Saturday evening. I was served by two young guys who were really kind and helpful. The food here is good and their prices are reasonable. I'm definitely coming back for more :)"
"Visited Hunky Dory with family. Overall, the food is consistent with other branches of Hunky Dory. The atmosphere is good and the decor is minimalistic that suits the vibe of the place. The waitress was really polite and friendly, and welcomed us in the restaurant. I found the brown rice slightly undercooked and reported to the owner as a courtesy. He checked and agreed, and offered a replacement but it wasn't a major problem and I didn't want to waste food for a minor issue. We ordered the grilled fish versions of the Latino, the African and an Old School fish and chips. Fish was cooked well, although the fillet seemed too small. I guess they can increase the size of the fillet and accordingly raise the price. They should also consider reducing the amount of Greek salad and lime that comes with the meal. That way they can keep the margins and the portions balanced."
