Recently, we have upgraded our facilities to provide easier access to this stunning 17-acre site through gravel pathways that meander around the lake, over streams, and through the enchanting wetlands. These pathways also lead to the ancient monastic site of Derryvelle, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rich history of the area.

As you explore our ecological loop walk, you will be surrounded by sparse vegetation that allows wildflowers to flourish, creating a vibrant tapestry of colors. This abundance of natural beauty also attracts a variety of butterflies, including the Dingy Skipper, Brimstone, Orange-tip, Green Hairstreak, Speckled Wood, Wall, and Small Heath. While enthusiasts search for the elusive Marsh Fritillary, sightings of this rare species have yet to be recorded. Keep an eye out for the Green Tiger Beetle, a fascinating creature with its brilliant green color and distinctive yellow spots. Be careful not to startle it, as it can swiftly take flight.

Situated between the bustling tourist hubs of Kilkenny and Cashel, Lough Doire Bhile is conveniently located near the major urban centers of Thurles, Cashel, Clonmel, and Kilkenny. Accessible from the N8 at Urlingford or the N76 via Ballingarry, our institution offers a tranquil retreat amidst the renowned Slieveardagh Hills. Nearby, you can explore the medieval walled town of Fethard or visit the historic Widow McCormack's "1848 War House" in The Commons, near Ballingarry.

The area surrounding Lough Doire Bhile boasts patches of bare ground and sparse vegetation, a rarity in the fertile lands of Tipperary. This unique environment is home to three pairs of breeding lapwings, a species that is facing a decline in Ireland. In fact, the lapwing is now listed on the Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern, making their presence here all the more special.
