Steeped in history, Ballaghmore Castle was constructed in 1480 by the Gaelic Chieftain MacGiollaphadraig, now known as Fitzpatrick. As the Lords of Upper Ossory, they defended North Munster from this strategically placed castle along the old Irish Road. Adorning the front facing wall is a Sheela-na-Gig, a carved stone symbol of pagan fertility believed to ward off evil.

However, Ballaghmore Castle faced its share of challenges throughout the centuries. Cromwell's forces partially destroyed the castle in 1647, and it fell into disuse until it was restored in 1836 by Mr. Ely, who discovered a hoard of gold on the land. Tragically, Ely was shot by an angry tenant and never had the chance to live in the castle. After years of neglect, Gráinne Ní Cormac (also known as Grace) purchased the castle in 1990 and dedicated herself to its restoration. Today, the castle stands proudly as a testament to its rich history and is beautifully furnished for guests to enjoy.
