About the Business

Limper Geology Museum

Welcome to the Karl E. Limper Geology Museum, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Miami University's Shideler Hall in Oxford, Ohio. Our museum offers visitors a fascinating journey through the dynamic world of geology, featuring an impressive collection of geological specimens from around the globe. Whether you are a student, educator, or simply a curious mind, we invite you to explore our array of minerals, rocks, fossils, and meteorites.

Our mission at the Limper Geology Museum is to enrich the educational experience of undergraduate students and engage the community by providing an environment rich in natural specimens. Our displays are designed to enhance understanding and appreciation of fundamental geological concepts, offering insights into the history and ever-changing nature of our planet.

Among our highlights are the world-renowned fossils of southwestern Ohio, which provide a unique glimpse into Earth's ancient past. We also offer context-rich exhibits that illustrate the broad societal impacts of earth science, connecting our visitors to the vital role geology plays in understanding and addressing contemporary issues such as climate change, natural disasters, and resource management.

The museum is dedicated to outreach, offering learning experiences for local schools and the public. We encourage educators and community groups to visit and explore the wonders of geology, with opportunities for tailored field trips and collaborative events with other campus museums, such as the Hefner Museum of Natural History.

Admission to the Limper Geology Museum is free, and we welcome visitors of all ages. We are conveniently located adjacent to the first-floor lobby of Shideler Hall (Room 126), just west of the intersection of US Highway 27 and State Route 73. For group visits, please contact Dr. Kendall Hauer, our museum director, to reserve your date and ensure a seamless experience.

Join us in our mission to inspire the next generation of geoscientists and foster a deeper understanding of our planet. We look forward to welcoming you to the Limper Geology Museum, where the wonders of the Earth are waiting to be discovered.

"A tiny but mighty museum (and just a block away from the school's natural history museum) with everything/anything to do with geology. So much to see/learn about! You'll need under an hour, and it is handicap accessible. You'll definitely want to make this a stop!"

"I really enjoyed my first visit to the Limper Geology Museum. It is located inside Shideler Hall. I was thrilled with all of the wonderful specimens that they had on display! It's great to see all of the rocks and mineral names and the origin of the specimen! I will have to come back when I have more time to admire them all again!"
