About the Business

Green Arch Restaurant

Welcome to Green Arch Restaurant, a cherished culinary gem nestled in the heart of Cortland, New York. Located at 107 Elm Street, Green Arch Restaurant has been a beloved local institution for over 91 years, offering a unique blend of history, tradition, and delicious food.

Founded by the enterprising Francesca Discenza, who arrived in Cortland with her husband Angelo at the turn of the century, Green Arch Restaurant has evolved from humble beginnings into a cornerstone of the community. Francesca, a pioneering entrepreneur, initially set up chicken coops at the rear of the property, selling fresh chickens and eggs throughout the Cortland area. Her entrepreneurial spirit didn't stop there; she also became the go-to person for fireworks, adding a spark of excitement to the neighborhood.

Francesca's determination and resourcefulness were legendary. When faced with competition from a local businessman selling fireworks, she boldly expanded her offerings to include bread, showcasing her adaptability and commitment to serving the community.

Today, Green Arch Restaurant continues to honor Francesca's legacy by providing a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a menu that celebrates both tradition and innovation. Whether you're a long-time resident or a visitor to Cortland, we invite you to experience the rich history and delicious flavors that make Green Arch Restaurant a beloved local treasure. Join us for a meal and become part of our storied tradition.

"The food is delicious. Probably the best restaurant we've dined at in Cortland thus far for Italian food. The ingredients are fresh. Their sauce is probably in the top five restaurants for tomatoe sauces I've had when dining out anywhere. The desserts are delicious. The prices on the menu, the quality, and the portions of the food are on point. Everything was cooked perfect except the choice in garnish (imo). I love cilantro but not on Italian dishes. Not sure if it was a mistake or trying something different than most other Italian restaurants. Cilantro is delicious but there are some people who do not like it. It's an acquired taste therefore it may not be the best choice of garnish for that type of cuisine because that type of ingredient isn't expected in my opinion. We'll be back hoping that the food is just as good as this time, only next time when bringing a party of four I've made a note to request not to be seated at a booth that is meant for a party of two."

"This was our first time there. We took our daughter there for her 21st Birthday. Food was amazing I ordered Lasagna it was really good. My Favorite was the Alfredo I tasted my sons first time ever I have liked Alfredo my husband didn't make. My husband had the Veal parm and angel hair very delicious. The Birthday girl had the chicken parm also amazing. The desserts were so good. The appetizers where also amazing had the stuffed artichoke, calamari and garlic toast. The sauce was delicious as well. Best Restaurant in Cortland"

"I really wanted to like this place - I'd heard and read great things about it. Unfortunately, the experience started bad and only got worse. We sat at the bar prior to our reservation and it was nearly 10 minutes before the bartender even acknowledged us, let alone got us drinks. After we were seated at our table, it took a long time for our server to come over and even longer for waters to be brought, food to be delivered, dirty plates to be cleared, etc. We were there for almost 2 hours due to the length of time we were waiting for items. The food was mediocre at best. Both of our salads were full of slimy inedible lettuce, the bread was gummy, and the calamari was incredibly salty (not to mention served on a plank nearly as long as the table). Entrees fared no better. The lasagna was underseasoned and the sauce was too sweet. It was also just barely warm. My partner's chicken/mushroom/meatball/pasta combo was not hot and had inedible chunks of food - we sent it back. The replacement sausage & meatballs he ordered instead were also not hot and were slathered in the too-sweet Arch sauce. Needless to say, we passed on dessert. When the check came, there were 3 drinks we did not order on the bill. The server was kind but seemed distracted and unable to pay attention to her tables fully. My partner and I were both incredibly disappointed by the experience and will likely not be returning."

"I can't say enough about the Green Arch! My family have been regulars at this restaurant over the years and there are many reasons as to why. EXCELLENT food (I had the pork chops - their signature dish - AMAZING!), Great atmosphere (they've kept and maintained the look/feel of the restaurant since it began in the 1930's) and EXCEPTIONAL wait staff. Prices are extremely reasonable for the quality of food provided and Matt, Paul and his staff are friendly and accommodating. Oh...and don't forget to have one of their bourbon old fashions...a cocktail they have mastered and have been making for as long as I can remember! When visiting the area, we always look forward to dining at the Green Arch and will continue to do so in the future. Bon appetite!"
