Avis Car Rental

"Similar to many others, I had a horrible experience with AVIS OGG location. Generally, being an AVIS preferred member has been a good experience. However, in this case it was disturbing to say the least. The car offered to me was old and had many dents and scratches. The agent at the desk warned me slightly saying "please carefully click pictures of the vehicle" which I took partially seriously. The vehicle we got was full of multiple scratches and dents. I tried to methodically take as many pictures as possible. Pictures are attached. While the car drove good without issues, my wife found a big cockroach later in the day. Picture attached. And when we returned the car the next day, to my utmost surprise, the agent said "there is one dent that is not accounted for. It was damaged in your possession". I said I have taken many pictures. But looking at all my pictures, I realized that I had not taken pictures of the front right bumper where she showed me the scratches. It was a gotcha moment for me, and I felt so stupid not to have been more careful in taking more pictures of every possible scratch or asking for a new car at the first place. Despite all the tech involved, this industry works on mutual trust and AVIS breached my trust there and then. I realize each such facility is a franchise with own way of managing customer experience. Unfortunately, the people at this particular facility seem expert at taking advantage of people by offering dented unclean cars and then putting blame on them. Such an exceptionally beautiful island with great people can do with more honest and sincere approach from this facility."

"This car was the worst example of a rental I’ve ever had in 30+ years of Avis loyalty. It was filthy, unsafe and heavily damaged. I asked for an exchange and was told take it or leave it. Very sad experience. Very 3rd world."

"Had a pleasant experience at this OGG Avis location. Staff were incredibly friendly and the Avis Preferred experience was quick and efficient. Upon landing I got an app notification that the car was ready and which parking spot it was in. Simply walked up and threw our luggage in and went on our vacation. The Kia Forte we received was in great condition. Tires had plenty of tread, although we topped off the PSI being a little low at Costco. Exterior and interior were clean and we had no problems tackling all of our driving on the island. Return was also very simple at drop off and overall had no complaints with the whole experience!"

"They rented me a jeep with a tire that I had to constantly put air in. The A/C would get stuck on heat full blast. The car was disgusting, dinged up, dented, smelled bad. First they tried to charge me 250$ for the tire, which I had already emailed them about and provided evidence was defective when I picked up from airport. Once I provided them with evidence again, they charged me 250$ for sand. On an island. I will admit, it was pretty sandy (I had the car for 12 days). However I had rented a car the last time I was in Hawaii and returned with some sand and had zero issues with another rental service. I’ll attach pictures of the jeep at time of pick up so you can see what 1k got me. The white spots in the pictures are scratches and dents, not glare from photos. The car was dirty when I received it, as you can see in the pictures. First and last time I will ever rent from them. I’ve never had an experience like this, and I’ve rented plenty of cars in my 12 years of traveling."

"There was no option for no stars so I had to choose one. Upon arrival we went to get car from assigned bin and there was another customer getting into our assigned car. Which I don’t understand because we had just been at the rental counter 2 minutes before. We chose another car and it was not looked over when leaving nor were we advised to look over the vehicle before leaving. The vehicle had dents, dings and scratches all over and was thrashed on the inside. It had not been washed and had garbage inside and under the seats. Husband noticed the psi level was low on front driver tire on dash. Had another alert for low psi back rear driver side tire and was lucky enough to get to a safe location before the tire completely shredded. Upon him stopping he noticed that all four tires were beyond worn and shredded. He was on his way to go golfing so I had to go pick him up and take him. After him barely making his tee time I called Avis roadside assistance 3 times. The car was parked at a gas station in a safe location but I was told I had to wait with the vehicle for over 2 1/2 hours. Mind you we are on vacation and I was not going to waste more of my day waiting for a tow truck. An avis worker should have gone there to wait with the vehicle. I told the Avis worker I was not going to wait and I took the key to the avis location. The woman I dealt with at the airport location was very nice and understanding. I had told her I would need to come back later to pick up the replacement. Which should have been delivered to us. The amount of danger that we were put in is astounding and beyond unacceptable. The fact that there is no safety check on the rental cars is astonishing. The replacement vehicle that we were given was filthy, there was food smeared all over the side of the car that splattered in on the driver seat and had garbage left under all the seats. I will never use Avis again, and I will be telling everyone I know not to use Avis."
