"We remodeled and were looking for a unique mantle after getting rid of our standard plaster one. We looked and looked for a 12 ft wood mantle and saw we’d be paying over $3000 for what we wanted. J&W is literally across the street from our office so we stopped by and spoke with one of the guys. We explained what we wanted and he spent a good 30 min helping us pick out the perfect piece. He gave us details on how to sand and stain. Precondition the wood and even beat it up a little. The mantle is beyond perfection!! It’s such a beautiful piece in our home and I just love looking at it. The wood cost is less than $150 and between installation and staining, it cost us less than $300 to get a mantle that isn’t prefabbed and is the size we wanted. Thank you J&W for taking the time and sharing your knowledge!!"

"This is a great place with friendly, helpful staff. Lumber is getting more difficult to find and the prices are out of control, but J&W had what I needed in stock."

"Poor customer service and careless craftsmanship. I recently purchased shiplap from J&W for an interior accent wall. I shopped around the big box stores but was not satisfied with the quality of their lumber so decided to go to an actual lumberyard. I knew that it would cost me more a lot more, which it did, but figured I would be getting a far superior end product. J&W did not have 1x6 WRC shiplap in stock but explained it could be milled to the profile I provided for this specific application. I paid almost as much for the milling as I did for the actual lumber. When I came to pickup my order, the lumber was high quality but I noticed a couple boards that had significant variation in the depth of the lap that had been cut. I understand wood is not a perfect material but the variation was up to 1/4" on one board and demonstrated complete carelessness during milling . When I voiced my concern about the quality to the employee who was helping me, who I later learned was the manager, they were immediately were defensive. I was told that I would either need to pay for the boards to be milled again or pay for new lumber. I decided to unloaded all the boards to check the quality before I left. I asked that the one board that had the most variation in depth be re-milled because it was not what I paid for and this would cause issues during installation. They reluctantly agreed and took it for a second pass. I waited and when the employee returned with the board, it was no better. It was apparent that they had not even looked at it. I had to get them to run it for a 3rd time before it was somewhat straight. I interacted with multiple employees while at the yard and they all had the same attitude that I was being a nuisance and making a big deal about nothing. During installation, it immediately became apparent that the profile was not consistent. Since the depth of the lap was not half of the board thickness and inconsistent, I could not get everything to lay flat against the wall. I had to rerun everything again on my table saw at home to get it right. It only took a couple minutes to get the setup I was looking for and I was able to hold the boards in a way that prevented them from chattering when cutting but somehow J&W was not able to do this or did not care enough. I expected more from a lumberyard that advertises custom milling and will definitely avoid for any future projects."

"I was looking for a deck material for a new deck we were building. My contractor referred me to J&W Lumber in Sorrento Valley and they were absolutely wonderful. Explained all the different materials, had a beautiful display area where you could look at all sorts of applications. They delivered everything on time and a great price and we were even able to return materials that we did not use. Staff is very nice and very knowledgeable ."
