"I am a classically trained soprano with a BA in music and I have been singing professionally for many years. Despite this background, I struggled to sing styles other than classical...until I started taking lessons with Laurie Winckel at Vocal Edge Voice Studio. She uses techniques that quickly hone in on troublesome parts of the voice and then provides multiple solutions to work through each problem. "I consider myself a non-traditional student. I spent half a century not singing because I was told as a child that I didn't do it well. As a result I didn't enjoy music and envied people who did. I contacted Vocal Edge with very small goals. I wanted to sing to my grandchildren and sing along with the radio.  Laurie enthusiastically invited me in and I was scared to death. I didn't even want to "sing" out loud in the lesson because I literally had a range of only a few notes and no ability to project them and I had no idea what I was doing. She was so encouraging and immediantly identified what my problems were and how to work on them. I was amazed that I could actually learn!  I picked "Happy Birthday" as the first song I wanted to work on because I'd spent a lifetime going to parties and not even singing this simple song. I quickly accomplished my first 2 singing goals, and a new world opened up for me. I began to love music. In a huge leap of faith I sang a solo at the studio recital, and picked the song that convinced me as a child that I couldn't sing.  It was a huge moment for me, and I am so grateful for all of the patience and encouragement Laurie gave me. She did everything she could musically to help me do it successfully, but more than that, she worked with me on countless coping techniques because of the mental blocks I'd built over a lifetime.  I can now enjoy music and I'm not afraid to sing out loud!  When I talk to people about my lessons so many of them tell me they can't sing, but taking lessons is how you learn. It's a skill like any other. I don' t plan on being a performer or leading a group. I take lessons because it gives me joy. I love hearing myself improve and I sing all the time. "I have been taking voice from Laurie at Vocal Edge since I was 13 years old. I perform quite often, both as a solo artist and also with two separate rock bands. So keeping my voice in shape is very important to me. Since starting my lessons with Laurie, my vocal range has increased tremendously, as well as my stamina.
