About the Business

Davis Mountains Preserve

The Davis Mountains Preserve is a rugged yet fragile sky-island refuge located in Fort Davis, Texas. Surrounded by the vast West Texas desert landscape, this park is a tourist attraction that offers visitors a glimpse of the Lone Star State's rugged cowboy heritage. The preserve, established by The Nature Conservancy, spans over 32,844 acres and is home to diverse plant and animal species. With nearly 110,000 acres of the Davis Mountains region protected, the preserve provides important wildlife corridors and habitat for rare species.

Closed to the public for most of the year for research and conservation-related activities, the Davis Mountains Preserve opens on select weekends for camping, hiking, biking, equestrian activities, picnics, photography, birding, and more. Visitors can explore the stunning landscapes, towering Ponderosa pine trees, cool mountain creeks, and dramatic views of canyons and peaks. The preserve is also home to a variety of wildlife including black bears, bobcats, elk, mountain lions, and a wide range of bird species.

The Madera Canyon Trail, separate from the Davis Mountains Preserve, is open to the public year-round and offers a chance to experience the unique sky island ecosystem of West Texas. Visitors can drive, hike, and bike through the preserve, enjoying the brilliant night skies beneath the world's largest International Dark Sky Reserve. With opportunities for guided day tours and educational programs, the Davis Mountains Preserve is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

"Fabulous place with primitive camping and lots of hiking trails to see the Greater Short-horned Lizard, interesting birds, foxes, and the night sky. It's only open a few times per year, so check the Nature Conservancy website before you go."

"There’s only 100 spots for visitors on their open-to-the-public days. It’s well worth the visit and we will be coming back."

"Incredible sky island habitat - native grasslands and high elevation woodlands. Hike the public trail from the picnic area off the scenic loop or visit during an open weekend."
