"This is the best-kept recreation secret in Birmingham! Inexpensive, uncrowded, refreshing. It only costs $1 to swim from noon-6 Monday-Saturday, and it's free Monday and Thursday nights 6-7. There's a free swim team for kids up to age 18, and if you swim on the team, you swim free any other time. Can't swim? There are Red Cross lessons for, I think, $5 for two weeks. The only problem? The city pools, including Underwood, are run by teachers, so they close when teachers go back to school. This year (2015), teachers go back Aug. 5, so the pool closes July 31. That's a true bummer!"
