About the Business

Kuker-van Til Nature Preserve

Located at 2003 Perry Street in Holland, Michigan, the Kuker-Van Til Nature Preserve is a peaceful park and tourist attraction just minutes away from the bustling city. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the preserve's rolling hills and towering trees, experiencing the diverse habitats of wetlands, forests, and open areas that provide a sanctuary for birds and wildlife.

The preserve protects a recovering oak forest in an area that has been heavily impacted by residential development. The mature hardwood swamp at the east end of the preserve is home to many rare plant species and serves as a natural filter for water flowing into Lake Macatawa. Efforts are ongoing to remove invasive species and establish a native oak forest in place of an old scotch pine plantation.

The history of the preserve is rooted in the dedication of property owners Bud and Edie Van Til, who resisted development pressure and worked to preserve the land in its natural state. After Edie's passing, the land was willed to Larry and Marilyn Blackburn, who continued the conservation efforts with the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. In 2006, the Kuker-Van Til Nature Preserve was officially established to ensure the land's protection for future generations.

In 2021, an additional 6 acres were donated to the preserve in honor of the late C. Michael Brown. The Land Conservancy of West Michigan, a nonprofit organization, works to conserve natural land in the region by creating public preserves, supporting community efforts to create natural areas, and assisting private landowners in protecting their own land. Visitors to the Kuker-Van Til Nature Preserve can explore the beauty of nature while supporting the ongoing conservation efforts of the Land Conservancy.

"This trail is a hidden treasure! Just under a mile, at 0.9 miles, Kuker-van Til Nature Preserve is a superb trail loop. The entrance to the trail is well-hidden! And unless you are looking for it, you would never know it existed at all. To find it, look for a green and tan sign, just past the shoulder on the north side of the road. To park your car, you can either pull over to the shoulder, or add another half mile to your hike and park at Winstrom Park. Because it's so hidden, there are no people here! None! Just you, God, and nature. Which, after the hustle and bustle of Holland city life, can be quite refreshing and superlative!"

"Nice simple hike with young kids. Did have to park at a nearby park and walk to the nature preserve, probably doubled the distance because of this. Very pretty and would do it again in the spring! Well marked with blue dots so even in the snow we had no problem finding our way."

"Great place right outside of Holland and close to Lake Michigan for a leisurely walk in the woods. Hard to find but worth the effort! Even with my difficulty walking (severe back problems and walk with a cane) it only took about an hour to walk through. There are a few hills to go up and down but they are rather easy. The trail is very well marked with paint dots on trees. At about the halfway point there is a bench built by the Boy Scouts and 2 bat houses. Great for tree/mushroom/flower photography and identification, bird calls and viewing, and animal track identification. Need to park alongside Felch Street and not much room. Make sure that you are looking on the North side of the road to see the sign. It is parallel to the woods and hard to see from the road if you are not looking. But very much worth the effort!!"

"Very very hard to find. But well worth the look! I'm disabled and walk with a cane, but the trails were well Warren and well-marked. I went with a friend and even with my disability was able to walk the trail in a little over an hour. What was really surprising was halfway through the walk is a bench built by the Boy Scouts by to bat houses! The bench is well placed as it gives you a nice chance to catch your breath and enjoy nature. The only thing that would have made the experience better is as a newcomer it would have been nice to know that the trail circled around and came back out where it started. We weren't sure if we needed to turn around and come back or continue going. Being disabled this would have been very helpful information. Besides that the walk was very very enjoyable. We went the first week of October and got to see a lot of unusual mushrooms. Colors I've never seen before. Also with the well-worn track we were able to see animal prints and follow them."
