"Wonderful, well executed southern food. The biscuit remained soft on the inside and crusty on the outside despite the onslaught of dripping Nashville hot sauce coming from the perfectly crispy, juicy fried chicken it was holding. When the heat became a bit challenging, lovely cool coleslaw came to the rescue. Excellent grits and greens. My 13 year old said it was the best cheeseburger he’d ever eaten. Casual Appalachian atmosphere and a nice view. We will be coming back for dinner and cocktails."

"Service was outstanding. They had Faygo Rock N Rye, my favorite soda, so home run there. I had the chicken dinner. It was so good. Nice and moist. My daughter had their mac & cheese. She said it was really good. I will be back."

"I've visited the Southerner several times now, and I've never had a bad experience. The staff has always been professional and friendly, and the food has been phenomenal. This time I ordered the grits and greens with a biscuit and potato gratin on the side. I've tried the shrimp and grits and fried chicken before, and those were wonderful. This time was likewise delicious, and the potato gratin is to die for. The drink menu is pretty expansive, and there were a lot of options to choose from (although I just stuck with coffee). As usual, the view of the river from the window was pleasant. I would say that the Southerner is probably the restaurant I would recommend in Saugatuck when trying to impress, and I cannot say enough good about it."

"The food was very good. We were able to sit on the deck to view the water. Reasonable prices as well. Our waitress wasn't very friendly & seemed annoyed when taking our order. I don't recommend asking any questions about items on the menu. At one point she even slammed her foot down."
