Jonathan Dickinson State Park is a must-visit tourist attraction located at 16450 Southeast Federal Highway in Hobe Sound, Florida, United States. This park boasts sixteen distinct natural communities, including coastal sand hills, upland lakes, and scrub forests, as well as the pristine Loxahatchee River. Visitors can explore the park on land or by water, with opportunities for biking, hiking, horseback riding, boating, canoeing, and kayaking.
The park also has a rich history, with attractions such as a secret World War II training camp, the story of the shipwrecked Quaker merchant who the park is named after, and the legendary Wild Man of the Loxahatchee, Trapper Nelson. Ranger-guided tours of Trapper Nelson's pioneer homestead are available year-round, providing visitors with a glimpse into the past.
Unfortunately, some areas of the park are currently closed for improvements, such as the Kitching Creek Nature Trail overlook and the top viewing platform of the Hobe Mountain Observation Tower. However, the nature trail and lower and middle viewing areas of the tower remain open for visitors to enjoy.
Additionally, the shuttle for the Loxahatchee River Paddle is currently out of service, so visitors must arrange their own transportation if they wish to paddle the upper reaches of the river. Despite these temporary closures, Jonathan Dickinson State Park remains a unique and fascinating destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

"This place is awesome! Well maintained trails and also has plenty of hiking trails. Be warned though that there are A LOT of bycyclists here so be aware of the trails; saw a group of birders that were standing in the middle of a biking path and almost got hit by some cyclists. Small fee to enter (we paid $6) and there are campgrounds too. We came to bird and were able to see the scrub jays here."
"Great Place Friendly Staff. The volunteers here are excellent. One of Floridas great Parks. Plenty of trails to hike. Lots of trails to ride bikes. There is kayaking and canoeing here as well as motorboat rental. They have pontoon boats that will take you down the river to trapper Nielsen’s place. And let the dirt you see how he lived. Camping is two different places. They have some Glamping sites and regular Cabin to rent too. The highest point in south Florida is in the park."
"One of the larger state parks and a gem. Beautiful long winding roads through glorious Florida nature. Trees as far as the eye can see. Husband climbed the Hobe tower for great views from the highest point in S Florida and we drove to the large picnic and concession area and enjoyed an ice cream by the river. Plenty of picnic tables and pavilions, children’s play area, kayak and bike rental and a small gift shop and food truck. There is a boat tour that leaves from the dock, which we unfortunately did not have time to enjoy. If you’re in to train spotting, the Brightline track also runs through here for great views! There are also several campgrounds and cabins for rent. A lovely escape from the s Florida traffic and only $6 for entry!"
"The pine grove campground at Jonathan Dickinson is one the best campgrounds we have ever camped in, seriously! We were lucky enough to get a two week stay here and we loved it. Full hookups, spacious private sites, clean and beautiful bathrooms, access to miles of walking and biking trails. Sunoutdoors and all your fancy-pants $100 per night private campgrounds - eat your heart out - Jonathan Dickinson State Park has got it going on!!! The park itself is very beautiful. I particularly enjoyed experiencing the unique vegetation of this part of Florida which I had never seen before. There is an observation tower to climb for a great view of the park and the surrounding area. The park covers an area that was occupied by Camp Murphy - an army base in WW2. There is a very interesting history here and you can still see some relics of the camp scattered through the park. My husband is very interested in history and one of the park rangers took the time to explain a lot of it to him, so nice! Thanks for a great two weeks Jonathan Dickinson!!!"
"A beautiful park that we just stayed in for the first time. Spacious and well maintained sites as are the facilities. It is really pretty sunny in most sites, but still enjoyable. We took a pontoon boat ride down the Loxahatchee and saw some nice birds, no gators as it was cloudy. Very friendly and helpful staff completed our stay."
