Black Creek Preserve

Black Creek Preserve, located on Winding Brook Road in Esopus, New York, is a 130-acre park and tourist attraction that offers a family-friendly hiking experience. While the steep uphill climb at the start may be a challenge for younger hikers, everyone will enjoy crossing the suspension bridge over the creek and skipping stones along the Hudson River shoreline. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as blueback herring and bald eagles as you explore the preserve.

The health and safety of visitors is a top priority, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. All special events and group outings must be pre-approved, so be sure to fill out the necessary form and contact Anthony Coneski to coordinate your visit.

In addition to Black Creek Preserve, nearby attractions include the John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary in West Park with hiking trails and the writer's rustic cabin, as well as Kingston's historic Rondout District with shops, restaurants, and the Hudson River Maritime Museum.

Black Creek Preserve has been connecting people with the inspirational power of the Hudson River since 1963 and is a featured destination in the "Esopus Explorer" walking program. Come and experience the natural beauty and wildlife of this scenic preserve in the heart of Ulster County.

"Most enjoyable walk, good workout. Bring strong hiking shoes. Lots of rocks can easily twist an ankle. Only a few people on the trail. River view, as always from the various trails in the Hudson Valley is outstanding."

"Signage at the road and parking area is clear, ample parking. Proceed past the map/information kiosk, cross the small road to the wooden arch. This is the yellow trail, which is the out and back portion. You’ll pass the gurgling waters, then cross an amazing suspension bridge. There is a steep, rocky, tree root ridden trail, with a rope and post “fence” to guide you. Do not count on that fence for support or to break your fall. Watch your steps carefully, use imbedded stones and sturdy roots as footholds. You’ll come downhill on your way back, and while that is less strenuous, it is more painstaking. Catch the red trail (which is mostly flat and easy) and take it to the blue trail or Hudson River Trail. This trail also has some steep grades, covered in fallen leaves. It is worth it for the water views and especially the overlook point. Take the blue loop back, catch the red trail, and take the same yellow trail back to the bridge and parking area. This big loop is about 2 miles total. Well marked, lovely trails. Wear bug spray, mosquitoes are out (warm October day.) You Can hear traffic and trains along the yellow trail, but as you get farther in, it’s a lot more peaceful."

"These trails have some beautiful bridges and creative little steps and walkways, plus there are beautiful views of the river and the woods. I took a star away because there are a few areas where it was really hard to find the trail, and a couple of parts of the trail that were difficult to get footing. You definitely need hiking shoes/boots!"

"We stopped here because we were passing by it on a road trip. It was a really pleasant accidental find. Very pretty, quiet, shaded, and clean. My dog had fun romping across the suspension bridge to get to the other side where she could play in the creek for a bit."

"Nice easy trail system, only 2 miles if you do the whole thing. Really cool suspension bridge over the Creek. Parts of trail are rocky & steep, could be a problem if you're not sure-footed. Trail leads down to Hudson River with benches and scenic views. Rating only 4 stars because of the rocky areas."
