About the Business

The Inn at Little Washington

The Inn at Little Washington, located at 309 Middle Street in Washington, Virginia, is a luxurious lodging institution known for its inspired American cuisine created by Patrick O'Connell. The dining experience at The Inn has been compared to performance art, with guests always playing the starring role in a romantic and whimsical setting. The menu pays homage to Classical French Cuisine while reflecting a belief in healthy, eclectic, and imaginative American cuisine. The restaurant sources much of its produce from a small farm on the campus and has established relationships with local farmers and suppliers. In 2021, Michelin awarded The Inn a Green Star for sustainability. The menu can accommodate various dietary restrictions and offers a full alternative vegetarian menu. The institution also offers an a la carte experience at Patty O's, a casual restaurant on the premises.

The guest rooms and suites at The Inn at Little Washington are sumptuous hideaways designed by London stage and set designer Joyce Evans. All room reservations include a welcome cocktail, afternoon tea, house breakfast, complimentary valet parking, and a guaranteed dining reservation each evening. The rooms feature modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, high-speed internet, and Bulgari bath products. Accessible rooms are available upon request.

The Inn has a rich history of hosting weddings, anniversaries, engagements, retirements, birthdays, and corporate events in various venues including the presidential cottage, historic ballroom, Field of Dreams, and the Parsonage Garden. Patrick O'Connell, a self-taught chef and native of Washington, DC, opened The Inn at Little Washington in 1978 and has since garnered worldwide recognition. He has been honored with numerous awards, including the James Beard Foundation's Lifetime Achievement award and the National Humanities Medal from the President of the United States. The Inn at Little Washington is a truly special destination for those seeking a unique and unforgettable experience.

"This review is for the inn, not the restaurant. My wife and I had an amazing long weekend at the Inn at Little Washington. It has a magical feel that's difficult to articulate. It's almost like being on a movie set. The views are incredible, the people kind, and the food delicious. We particularly loved the cottage we stayed in. It was incredibly cozy yet spacious. I can safely say it's one of the best, if not the best, five-star inn I've been to. People should know ahead of time that little washington is tiny. As a result, the inn itself is a place to go and relax, enjoy nature, read, drink, and eat great food. It's not a bustling area with all sorts of activities throughout the day. To me, that's what makes it such a great escape. And there are small towns and wineries near by for those who wish to leave the inn and explore. But the inn is so incredible, you'll probably just want to stay!"

"My wife and I were in DC for a business trip and drove over to The Inn for dinner. Totally ... worth it. A lovely experience in every way. I could expound at length, but I think the attached picture pretty much sums up how memorable the evening was to us. Our Christmas tree contains a homemade ornament that I crafted to honor the night and specifically the hilarious king of both cheese knowledge and cheese-based puns, Cameron the Cheese Whiz. Seriously, whatever you do, DON'T skip the cheese course. It's that cool."

"My wife and I had dinner here but did not stay at the inn. The only special event we were celebrating was a night away from the kids. Since we got here an hour before our reservation, we had drinks in a parlor area and it looked like a salon where afternoon tea was still going on. It was pretty nice and the cocktails were very tasty. Service was excellent. We were notified that our table was ready and escorted to our relatively private section. The food was excellent and the wine pairings were superb. Service was impeccable. It was a perfect mix of being attentive and leaving us alone to enjoy our food and drink. My favorite dish was the swordfish carpaccio and my wife enjoyed the lobster in baby cabbage. It was a memorable evening. Was it worth 1500 bucks? Eh. Am I glad that I tried it? Yes. My wife also really enjoyed the experience. This is definitely a place for really special occasions."

"What can possibly be said about this place? Only 90 minutes from DC in what feels like a storybook town. The Inns decor transports you to England (think downtown abbeyesque), the inn has a very warm feeling both literally and figuratively. The staff are so welcoming and sweet. We stayed in room 6, the Johnny Apple room and it was magnificent! It used to be 2 rooms and is now a suite. This room comes with 2 full bathrooms and an amazing arch door. We had the opportunity to have to attend tea time, dinner and, breakfast. Tea time was delicious and the tea selection was vast. Dinner was a set menu and you have the option of vegetarian and meat, we chose one of each. Each dish was delicious and thoughtfully prepared for your palette transition (see pics). We selected dessert and the cheese selection from Farah the cow, fantastic! We also had breakfast in the morning, it was a basket of muffins, croissants and bread, a flight of juices and, a selection of jams, we also ordered the blueberry lemon ricotta silver dollar pancakes and they were AMAZING! Overall I highly recommend you go."

"This was an amazing experience. I've never experienced service like this. The room was gorgeous. The grounds were lovely. Dinner was exquisite. The staff was amazing. Cocktails were the best I've ever had. You definitely pay a price for all this. For a very special occasion, going to the Inn at Little Washington cannot be beat. The tiny town is quaint and fun to walk around. I'd love to stay longer and do day trips and nearby activities but maybe after I hit the lotto!"
