Schmidt House

Built in 1904 for Olympia Brewing Company founder Leopold Schmidt and his wife Johanna, the elegant home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is within the Tumwater Historic District. The picturesque grounds feature native gardens, a reflective pool, and statues brought back from Europe by Leopold Schmidt. The house, designed by Seattle architect C. Alfred Breitung, contains the extensive Olympia Brewing Co. archives and is open for tours and event rentals. The Centennial Rose Garden on the property is cared for by volunteers. The grounds are open daily during daylight hours and are free for visitors to explore. Guided tours of the house are available for free, and a 3D virtual tour is also offered for those with mobility issues. The History Program at Schmidt House includes tours, History Talks, and guided riverwalk tours of Brewery Park at Tumwater Falls. The house can be rented for private events, such as weddings, a limited number of times per season. The Olympia Tumwater Foundation owns and manages Brewery Park at Tumwater Falls, the Schmidt House, and offers scholarships and grants through its Education Program.
